Self-esteem

Hello Carolina,

The development of self-esteem and positive perception of oneself is very important for children and teens, since it influences their emotional well-being and their ability to face challenges and establish healthy and safe relationships with others.

Self-esteem refers to the evaluation and perception that a person has of him/herself. Healthy self-esteem results in children and teens learning to trust their instincts, helps them develop resilience and makes them feel empowered to ask questions and ask for help when they need to. These skills and abilities are essential for children to feel confident to explore, learn and try new things in a way that is fun, confidence building and safe.

When children and teens have good self-esteem, they are more equipped to overcome obstacles and bounce back from difficulties, as they are confident in their ability to deal with adversity. Also, positive self-esteem contributes to establishing healthy relationships with others, since children and teens who feel more self-confident, are better able to express their needs and respect their own limits as well as the limits of others.

World Hug Group is proud to have a special partnership with EduCamp.

Together we offer great programs, tools, and important information to promote child wellness and safety!

EduCamp is a first class summer camp, located in one of the most beautiful areas of Costa Rica. It has been in operation for more than 16 years, positively impacting thousands of children and their families, through different programs and activities.

This Summer, World Hug Group and EduCamp are back working together!

Every week, during camp season a special day is designated to teach safe practices through fun activities, where children develop a healthy self-esteem and learn important tools to use in their daily lives to stay happy and safe!

Week 1: The safety Hand

Week 2: The Hat of Solutions

Week 3: The Stars

This week at EduCamp we had the "The Stars" activity.

Kids were invited to think of three positive qualities about themselves and write them in their 'star'. The Kids also decorated the stars and shared their positive qualities with one another. Each star became their own "magic wand".

We invite you to try this activity with the children in your lives.

When children recognize their own strengths it helps them build a strong identity and develop a positive image of themselves. They are more likely to stay no when they are not ok with something.

When children recognize their strengths, they also feel motivated to learn, explore and discover new things and they develop confidence in their ability to succeed in different areas of their lives.

This month, World Hug Group conducted an online training workshop in partnership with Integrativa for the UNIDOS organization in Mexico City to teach their staff and volunteers about abuse prevention.

UNIDOS is an organization that is dedicated to transforming "lives through the interaction of people with and without disabilities through experiential activities to achieve a more aware, empathetic and inclusive society."

WHG was honored to work in partnership with the renowned Costa Rican psychologist Dyalá Castro, director of INTEGRATIVA.

Dyalá is a clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience with survivors of sexual abuse and trauma. She is also the creator of workshops and courses for parents in the accompaniment of children after living adverse experiences.

We offered a customized program to train the Unidos staff and volunteers about recognizing and preventing abuse. UNIDOS work with kids, teenagers and young adults all year around, and we were able to share with them some useful tips to implement in their daily activities.

Some of the topics covered were:

  • Statistics about abuse
  • Definition of abuse
  • Types of Sexual Abuse
  • Proper response and support towards a person who has experienced abuse
  • 5 Tips to keep Kids and Teens Safe
