ILS Chair's News & Notes

Plans are nothing; planning is everything.

-Dwight D. Eisenhower

Dear ILS Members,

It is time to start planning for our Section’s annual meeting. This year’s meeting will be held at the Boca Raton Resort. In ILS tradition, we will have the Chair’s reception on Thursday evening, June 22, 2023, which will be followed by our annual meeting and luncheon on Friday, June 23, 2023. Details on meeting times, locations, etc. for all events will be forwarded in the coming weeks. However, The Florida Bar room block at the Boca Raton Resort is now open.

Take advantage of significantly discounted room rates by visiting reserving today. Remember that the hotel always sells out, so book early!

Also, there are a couple of great events happening next week – past ILS Chair Clarissa Rodriguez will be speaking about NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), and our colleagues at FSU College of Law will be hosting Reflections on the Rule of Law in Human Rights. Please see below for additional information on both of these events. Finally, please remember that if you are interested in serving on the ILS Executive Council or as Vice-Treasurer of our Section, your Statement of Interest is due by April 30, 2023.

Happy Spring!

Best regards,

Jacqueline Villalba, Esq.

Internship Opportunity Organized by the Paris Bar for Both English and French Speaking Lawyers!

Since 1991, the Paris Bar organizes a unique training program for young French speaking lawyers, in partnership with the Ecole de Formation professionnelle des Barreaux du ressort de la cour d'appel de Paris (EFB).  The "Stage International" brings together young French speaking lawyers from all over the world for a two-month theoretical and practical training.  Since 2015, the Paris Bar also organizes a second version of the program for English speaking lawyers called the "International Program".

Both programs are organized in cooperation with foreign bar associations and are supported by some French Embassies abroad. The Stage International will take place from October to November 2023 (8 weeks).  The International Program will take place in May and June 2023 (exact dates to be confirmed by the Paris Bar).

The internship offers participants an introduction to the French legal system.  In the first month of the Stage International the foreign lawyers will participate in programs of the “Ecole de Formation du Barreau” to be able to understand the French legal system and its procedures.  Participants are able to discover the daily routine of the Palais de Justice by attending hearings, visiting the major French institutions and getting an insight of European law.  In the second month, the foreign lawyers will have the opportunity to experience Parisian legal life and will intern in a Parisian Law Firm.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Europe Committee Chair Susanne Leone at for more information.

If you are reading the Gazette, chances are that you are a practitioner or a student with an interest in International Law, one of the most wide-ranging, exciting and challenging legal specialties. Everyone in our field knows how crucial it is to stay on top of diverse and evolving national legal regimes, and at the same time, the difficulty of keeping meticulously up-to-date on developments around the world.

The International Law Section (ILS) of The Florida Bar is here to help you, the practitioner, navigate both the everyday and big-picture challenges of our field. Our Section is your forum to share knowledge and best practices, and to meet and mingle with peers in professional collaborations that can only enhance your grasp of the specialty and your standing among clients and peers.

Let ILS membership assist you in developing a thriving international practice through peer network development that includes important shared learnings and reciprocal referrals of clients and casework.

If your practice transcends borders, join us in making this the authoritative, go-to forum for Florida and the gateway to the region for anyone practicing International Law. Our Section is open to lawyers from other states and countries, full-time faculty at U.S. law schools, and full-time U.S. law students, all of whom may participate as associate members.
