“We are free, but not to be evil, not to be indifferent to human suffering, not to profit from the people…”
-Jose Marti
Dear ILS Members,
This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the Cuban-American Bar Association (CABA) Cuba Conference, which our Section supported, along with several other members of our Section. The conference focused on International Human Rights and Legal Advocacy and featured, among others, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission Armando Valladares, two Florida Supreme Court Justices John D. Couriel and Jorge Labarga, and our Section’s very own Past Chair, Eduardo Palmer, who participated in an extraordinary panel on the international human rights pro bono legal work he and his colleagues have undertaken on behalf of the Cuban people for several years. The conference was an insightful and powerful discussion regarding the rule of law, democracy, and human rights, as well as the oppression many of the Cuban people continue to face today in this regard.
Yesterday, Israel declared war on Hamas in response to their attacks on its country. Media outlets are reporting over 600 dead and approximately 100 hostages. It is a tragic time for the country, region and the international community. Over the past few weeks, the ILS, through our Chair of the ILS Gazette Committee, Matthew Akiba, has been in discussions with the Israeli Bar, to explore a collaboration with them, including delegations, webinars and ultimately a cooperation agreement. We hope to continue our discussions and efforts but recognize this tragedy will result in delays. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Israel and for a prompt and peaceful resolution to this unfortunate conflict.
As a friendly reminder, our award-winning publication, the International Law Quarterly, is requesting articles for its Hot Topics issue focused on climate change and other hot topics in International Law for its Winter 2024 issue. Please see more details below and I encourage you to submit your articles for consideration.
Best,

If you are reading the Gazette, chances are that you are a practitioner or a student with an interest in International Law, one of the most wide-ranging, exciting and challenging legal specialties. Everyone in our field knows how crucial it is to stay on top of diverse and evolving national legal regimes, and at the same time, the difficulty of keeping meticulously up-to-date on developments around the world.
The International Law Section (ILS) of The Florida Bar is here to help you, the practitioner, navigate both the everyday and big-picture challenges of our field. Our Section is your forum to share knowledge and best practices, and to meet and mingle with peers in professional collaborations that can only enhance your grasp of the specialty and your standing among clients and peers.
Let ILS membership assist you in developing a thriving international practice through peer network development that includes important shared learnings and reciprocal referrals of clients and casework.
If your practice transcends borders, join us in making this the authoritative, go-to forum for Florida and the gateway to the region for anyone practicing International Law. Our Section is open to lawyers from other states and countries, full-time faculty at U.S. law schools, and full-time U.S. law students, all of whom may participate as associate members.
