Dear ILS Members,
It is hard to believe the summer is almost over and students are already back to school! This is an exciting time for students who gear up for another school year, reconnect with friends and teachers, and are introduced to their new classes.
While the classroom is a critical component of any education, there is no substitute for “real world” work experience. I have always encouraged my son, students and mentees to supplement their education with a job, an internship and volunteer opportunities. In these roles, students learn about the workplace, develop social skills, build their network, and foster independence and responsibility.
One of the goals for the ILS this year is to increase our law student engagement. We have great law schools in Florida and many of our law students are interested in pursuing careers in international law. I hope you will encourage these law students to join our Section and serve as Law Student Interns with one of our Committees. Whether it’s iLaw, the Richard Dewitt Memorial Vis Pre-Moot, our International Law Quarterly or any of our other wonderful committees, law students can gain valuable experience and connections through the ILS. If you know a law student that may be interested in becoming a Law Student Intern, please connect them with me or the Co-Chairs of our Law School Liaison Committee, Professor Manuel Gomez or Laura Reich. I guarantee they will thank you!
We have some exciting events coming up next month. On September 14, we will be hosting our first Lunch & Learn at Fiduciary Trust International, which will feature Patricia Mendez Cambo. As the former Deputy General Counsel of SoftBank Group International, former Vice Chair of Greenberg Traurig, and a Board Member of several organizations, including Expedia Group, Patricia has so much to share about her fascinating journey and international experience. We are also co-hosting an End of Summer Social with the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) on September 28 at Bay 13. Space is limited for these events, so please be sure to register early. We can’t wait to see you there!
