Dear ILS Members,
It’s Labor Day Weekend, an annual celebration of the achievements of American workers. Since 1894, the U.S. has observed Labor Day as a federal holiday on the first Monday in September. It recognizes workers who contributed to the strength, success and welfare of our country. But it is also a time for American workers to take time to relax and enjoy the long weekend with travels, the beach, picnics and other fun experiences with friends and family.
In almost poetic fashion, this weekend also marked the passing of Jimmy Buffet, the iconic American singer, songwriter and businessman whose island-themed music inspired millions of his “Parrot Head” fans. Buffet’s music, brands and lifestyle are synonymous with sun, fun, beach and relaxation. As lawyers, we are often hyper-focused on our work, profession and clients, but it’s important for our mental health and wellness to unplug, relax and recharge. So, while we recognize the hard work of Americans this Labor Day Weekend, let’s be sure to make time to kick back, relax, and enjoy a cheeseburger, a margarita, and a few Jimmy Buffet tunes!
As we prepare to close out the summer, we are co-hosting a fun End of Summer Social with our friends at the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) on September 28 at Bay 13. This is a fun and free event for ILS members, but space is limited, so please be sure to register via the link below.
We are also partnering with the Miami Finance Forum, eMerge Americas and the Florida Venture Forum for a Venture Capital Event on September 27 at the Four Seasons. The event features an all-star panel of venture capital firms moderated by yours truly. ILS members receive a discount rate.

On September 21, 2023, the University of Miami School of Law's White & Case International Arbitration L.L.M. Program and International Arbitration Institute invites ILS Members to the 2023 White & Case International Arbitration Lecture on "ICSID Arbitration: Past, Present and Future" featuring Meg Kinnear, Secretary-General of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
International investment law and dispute settlement have been amongst the most dynamic areas of international law in recent decades. This lecture will examine the origins of investment protection, highlight recent reforms to investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) procedure, address some of the misunderstandings about the topic and discuss some of the challenges that lay ahead. It will also consider the role of ISDS in attracting and retaining foreign direct investment, as governments seek to establish policy, legal and institutional environments that are conducive to mobilizing private capital.
