ILS Chair's News & Notes

Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally. It comes from what you do consistently.

- Marie Forleo

Dear ILS Members,

On Monday, in conjunction with the Ilustre Colegio de Abogacia de Madrid (the Madrid Bar Association), the ILS hosted its first ever international investment conference. Past Chair Eduardo Palmer, ILS members, Alcides Avila, Rafael Peñalver, Rodolfo Gomez, Arturo Aballi and I proudly carried the ILS flag to Madrid and presented on key legal topics related to investing and doing business in the United States. The conference was developed in furtherance of the Cooperation Agreement with the Madrid Bar Association, and we are grateful for the opportunity to continue collaborating with our Spanish colleagues. As you can see from the photos below, the ILS received a very warm welcome from our colleagues at the Madrid Bar Association. We were greeted with a spectacular flamenco show and a traditional dinner in the old caves under the Arco de Cuchilleros. With approximately 70 attorneys in attendance, the conference was a great success and another example of what the ILS does consistently – promote the uniform application of law and enhance the proficiency of practitioners.

Finally, in commemoration of International Women’s Day, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank all the incredible ILS women for their hard work and dedication to furthering our Section’s mission. When we all work together, extraordinary results are produced consistently.

Best regards,

Jacqueline Villalba, Esq.

Internship Opportunity Organized by the Paris Bar for Both English and French Speaking Lawyers!

Since 1991, the Paris Bar organizes a unique training program for young French speaking lawyers, in partnership with the Ecole de Formation professionnelle des Barreaux du ressort de la cour d'appel de Paris (EFB).  The "Stage International" brings together young French speaking lawyers from all over the world for a two-month theoretical and practical training.  Since 2015, the Paris Bar also organizes a second version of the program for English speaking lawyers called the "International Program".

Both programs are organized in cooperation with foreign bar associations and are supported by some French Embassies abroad. The Stage International will take place from October to November 2023 (8 weeks).  The International Program will take place in May and June 2023 (exact dates to be confirmed by the Paris Bar).

The internship offers participants an introduction to the French legal system.  In the first month of the Stage International the foreign lawyers will participate in programs of the “Ecole de Formation du Barreau” to be able to understand the French legal system and its procedures.  Participants are able to discover the daily routine of the Palais de Justice by attending hearings, visiting the major French institutions and getting an insight of European law.  In the second month, the foreign lawyers will have the opportunity to experience Parisian legal life and will intern in a Parisian Law Firm.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Europe Committee Chair Susanne Leone at for more information.
