ILS Chair's News & Notes

Dear ILS,

Cheers to kicking off the 2024-2025 season! It is a great honor and privilege to be writing to you all as Chair. Over the last decade, I have connected with many of you professionally and personally and consider myself fortunate to have amassed such an accomplished group of colleagues and friends. I look forward to meeting (and recruiting!) more ILS members during this next year, and I promise to work hard to ensure the ILS continues to thrive.

Of course, the ILS wouldn’t be what it is today without its culture of strong leadership. Please join me in giving our Immediate Past Chair, Richard Montes de Oca, a shoutout for all his hard work on keeping the ILS engaged and active over the last year. I certainly have big shoes to fill, although Ricard assures me he isn’t going anywhere!

Please also join me in welcoming our newest board member, Jeff Hagen, as Vice-Treasurer, and our two newest Executive Council members, Frederic Rocafort and Priscila Bandeira.

So, you may be wondering, what’s in store for this year? You can certainly count on it including our third annual ILS Fantasy Football League, “End of Summer” Happy Hour, Lunch & Learn series, International Law Quarterly publications, Orlando luncheon, holiday party, iLaw Conference, and Vis Pre-Moot Competition. We’re also planning a robust CLE calendar, and a few other surprises. Please mark your calendars for the following confirmed events:

ILS will return to the IBA Annual Conference: we will once again be attending the International Bar Association Annual Conference, which is taking place in Mexico City from September 16-20, 2024. The ILS and the Barra Mexica are jointly hosting a cocktail party on September 19, 2024, at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City.

iLaw will take place a week earlier than usual on Friday, February 7, 2024, at the JW Marriott Marquis in Downtown Miami.

The Richard DeWitt Memorial Vis Pre-Moot Competition will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2024.

The Miami International Arbitration Society (“MIAS”) invites practitioners and scholars to participate in the inaugural edition of its annual Writing Competition. The MIAS Writing Competition aims to foster intellectual exploration of current and cutting-edge topics in international arbitration and to provide an excellent opportunity to new and emerging professionals to showcase their expertise and contribute to the field.

Participants are encouraged to submit original articles that contribute to the understanding of contemporary international arbitration.
