The University of Miami School of Law is thrilled to recognize the exceptional achievements of Lily Arslanian (2L), Nicole Azarian (2L), and Abigail Wettstein (2L) who competed at the prestigious International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition held in The Hague during the first week of June!
This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to the dedication of Professor Paula C. Arias, who consistently leads the UM Law Moot Court teams with candor, discipline, and professionalism. Professor Arias' unwavering commitment ensures that UM Law remains at the forefront of international law practice and litigation!
The journey to the international stage began last August, with the students diligently studying International Criminal Law (ICL) under Professor Arias' guidance. In October, they delved into the complex moot court case, each assuming a specific role: Abigail as Counsel for the Defense, Nicole as Counsel for the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP), and Lily as Counsel for the Victims.
Their dedication paid off in March when they competed in the Americas Round, securing a coveted spot at the international rounds. It was there that Abigail's exceptional legal skills were further recognized, earning her the prestigious honor of Best Defense Counsel.
Lily Arslanian reflects on the experience:
"Representing UM Law at the ICC Moot Court Competition was incredibly fulfilling. Arguing before leading international legal experts was an honor, and finishing among the top 5 teams globally, along with being named 'Best Team in the Americas,' is a testament to the hard work and dedication we poured into this competition. Training under Professor Arias and alongside such a talented team has been the highlight of my law school career. The skills and passion for global justice I developed will undoubtedly stay with me forever."
Abigail Wettstein shares her perspective:
"Participating in the ICC Moot Court Program was unparalleled. Being surrounded by brilliant legal minds from across the globe was an invaluable experience. Meeting renowned international criminal law scholars enriched my understanding of the field and fueled my passion for legal advocacy. Professor Arias' guidance, along with the support of my teammates, propelled us to the semifinals and the prestigious title of 'Best Team of the Americas.' This journey has instilled in me a profound sense of purpose and a desire to contribute meaningfully to international law."
Nicole Azarian describes the demanding yet rewarding journey:
"The ICC Moot Court Competition was both arduous and enriching. The nine months of preparation exposed me to the vast depths of international law sources, with new insights even emerging on the eve of competition rounds. This dynamism is what makes moot court so exhilarating! Engaging with 97 teams from diverse backgrounds was an incredible opportunity. Professor Arias' guidance provided invaluable opportunities to hone our skills with local and international legal experts.exclamation This journey has undeniably strengthened my advocacy skills and deepened my passion for international criminal law."
The team's success wouldn't have been possible without the invaluable support of Leticia Mora and Nicolletta Pappas, former IMCP members who assisted Professor Arias in coaching. Additionally, the involvement of former students like Jordan Belhman, Javier Roldan, Shawn Abuhoff, Alejandra Chinea, Romeny Manessa, Natalia Jaramillo, Sean Werkheiser, and many others, also played a crucial role. These graduates, all former IMCP participants, exemplify the enduring value of the program – Canes shaping the careers of future Cane lawyers.
Professor Arias, Lily, Nicole, and Abigail's remarkable achievement is a source of immense pride for the University of Miami School of Law. Their dedication, talent, and teamwork culminated in a TOP 5 placement worldwide in the general rounds, advancing to the SEMIFINALS, and being ranked the BEST TEAM OF THE AMERICAS REGION!
