September 9, 2024 / Robert S. Hyer Elementary School
Dear Hyer Community,
It was a pleasure to see such a great turnout at our first PTA Speaker Series event this past Wednesday. I am so appreciative of the time we shared and our candid conversations. Thank you for your interest in our school and dedication to our students.
One of the topics covered by our superintendent, Dr. Mike Rockwood, at this meeting was related to HPISD's upcoming Bond Election. This election, called for by our School Board Trustees, will take place in November and it is important for every member of the community to feel informed. If you haven’t already, please review the information on the district webpage HERE.
Please feel free to reach out to me, or PTA President Ann Higginbottom, with any questions.
Have a wonderful week!
Gratefully,
Debbie

REMINDERS FOR AFTER SCHOOL DISMISSAL!
Now that we are a few weeks into the new school year, we wanted to offer a few reminders and clarifications about dismissal!
The Colgate side of the school is for our walkers, bikers and preschool pick up ONLY! Please avoid driving down Colgate unless you are coming to pick up your preschooler or utilizing the accessible parking spots. We want our bikers and walkers to safe be on their way with minimal car traffic! So if you are picking up your walker via car, thank you for parking on Tulane or Pickwick and letting them walk to you. We appreciate your attention to this detail which enables our preschool parents to scoop up their little ones and our students to safely exit the building.
The Caruth side of the school is our Carpool Line! Line up along Caruth to cue up with your carpool tag.
A friendly reminder that we have several “Reserved Parking” spots for auction winning families on Caruth! These spots are reserved throughout the entire school day — arrival through dismissal. Pretty great gig, right? If you think this is the best idea ever, use that as an incentive to join the Auction fun in October! Thank you for respecting those spots!
Stay safe, Huskies!

CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DOT DAY ON FRIDAY!
🔴 Send Your Husky to School Wearing Dots 🔵
International Dot Day, based on the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, is coming up on Friday, September 13th. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, and ignites a journey of exploration and inspiring others. Each year on International Dot Day, with the help of people just like you, the inspiration continues.
On Friday, please send your Husky to school wearing anything you can find with dots! Dots on headbands, dots on shirts, pants, stickers – anything with a dot will help us celebrate! Please contact our art teacher, Jennifer Munsie, with any questions.

HYER BUILDS CHARACTER WITH PURPOSEFULL PEOPLE CURRICULUM
We are excited to continue encouraging and celebrating our students as they build character throughout their elementary years. Research tells us that it is not grades or IQ scores that make us most successful, but instead the ability to “fail forward” - to develop resilience and persevere even when things get tough.
Each elementary campus will continue using the PurposeFULL people curriculum to focus on 9 different character traits throughout the year with lessons and activities tailored to individual grade levels. In the classroom, our teachers will be integrating conversations and activities to emphasize the importance of skills like Responsibility, Gratitude, Empathy, Perseverance, Honesty, Cooperation, Courage, and Creativity. Classes will also spend time with Ms. Thompson once a month to focus more in depth on these character traits. Our goal is to teach these young people to connect with one another more thoughtfully and skillfully and to work together to solve problems.
In the month of SEPTEMBER, we are focusing on RESPECT! Please contact Linde Thompson, Hyer Counselor, with any questions about the program.
