Spotlight on a Silver Knight
|
|
Mary Rueshoff is one of the original Silver Knights. She received an invitation to the first reception in September 1994. Although at first, she was not interested, she came to the realization that she would be able to reconnect and stay connected with many retirees. She went to that reception and has remained an active Silver Knight serving on the Executive Committee and helping to plan trips and social events for the Association.
Mary's fondest memories as a member include socializing at the luncheons and enjoying a great variety of trips, most notably one to the Culinary Institute of America with a boat ride on the Hudson and another to Lancaster for a delicious meal and a wonderful show at the theater.
Mary's Rutgers career began in 1966 while she was a full-time student at SUNY Oneonta. She secured a secretarial position for the summer at the Graduate School of Education. The following summer she worked for the English Department. After completing her studies at SUNY, Mary returned to the English Department in the summer of 1968 and was offered a permanent position in August. She spent her Rutgers career with the English Department, first in Scott Hall and then Murray Hall until her retirement on January 1, 1992.
Mary recalls a situation that was always good for a laugh. In Scott Hall, her office was opposite the men's room. It was difficult not to notice an occasional person in an extreme hurry, but it was the women who would accidentally run in; seeing their expressions when they came out chagrined; beyond all memories, those were the funniest!
Mary Rueshoff along with Mary Wilk and Joan DeBoer are three current members of the Executive Committee who were Silver Knights since the inception of the Association. Having conversations with each of them is a delight, and they are appreciated and applauded for their years of dedicated service beyond retirement.
