The HTFL Connection      December 18 - 31 2022

Note from the Director

I would like to wish you warm and hearty greetings on behalf of the Library Staff and myself during this holiday season. To celebrate the festive season, we have once again created a magnificent Holiday Book Tree at the Library entrance lobby. This tree is created entirely from recycled books and has become one of the Library's new holiday traditions, as well as a fundraising effort. Our community members have the opportunity to decorate the tree by making a minimum $10 donation to the Library in honor or recognition of an important person(s) or furry friend in your life. A name plate will be placed on the spine of the book acknowledging anyone you would like to be recognized on this Holiday Book Tree.

There are three ways to participate in this Holiday Book Tree tradition. You can stop by the Library to fill out a form to make a donation, download the donation form by clicking here then mail or bring it to the Library, or you can click here to donate online. Your donation helps us to continue providing excellent programs, services, and collections to our community!

The Friends of the Library Holiday Book Bundles are back again. These popular Book Bundles are great gifts to give your family and friends. These themed bundles include a stack of books and a small gift wrapped in a bow and are available for every age and interest. You will find the display of these Book Bundles in the Library lobby area.

Our major annual fundraising effort, the Library’s Annual Appeal, is underway. We hope that you will consider a contribution to support the Library in your end-of-year giving. Please show your support today, and ensure that the Haverford Township Free Library continues to be a strong, vibrant part of our community for years to come! Click here to make a donation to the Annual Appeal.

We hope that you and your family have a joyous holiday season. We look forward to seeing you in the library soon.

Warm regards,

Sukrit Goswami, Library Director

True Crime: Decoding the Evidence

Wednesdays, January 4 - February 22 - 2:00 pm

Zoom

While thousands of crimes go unsolved every year and often fade quickly from the headlines, there are some cold cases that continue to fascinate us for decades or even centuries. What is it about these cases—usually murders or mysterious deaths—that holds our interest? Why do professional and amateur investigators alike keep revisiting these grisly incidents?

Perhaps one of the reasons we continually return to these mysteries is the prospect of applying modern technology and forensic techniques to resolve uncertainties from the past. The tools and knowledge of the 21st century—from DNA analysis to psychological profiling and everything in between—give us hope that we may be able to finally crack the case and find a belated sense of closure. Whether we are trying to finally reveal the identities of Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac Killer or find peace regarding cases that have plagued our collective psyche for decades, the allure of sleuthing for the answers to the unanswerable is a powerful one.

In True Crime: Decoding the Evidence, you will join a panel of experts—Professor Raychelle Burks, Professor Elizabeth A. Murray, and Professor Emeritus Richard B. Spence—who will walk you through the evidence of nearly a dozen cold cases, including infamous serial killings, Hollywood scandals, deaths caused by everyday substances, a prehistoric murder, and many more.
