Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Newsletter

Volume 43, August 2024

A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Friends,

St Augustine gave us a prayer that is very interesting: “Command what you will Lord and give us what you command”. It is based on a presumption that the Lord gives sufficient grace for the task that he puts before us. If we ask anyone who has started their own business, we hear again and again of a blessing of perseverance and courage that eventually accompanies that person. A strength beyond them will get them through challenging times. When it seems like nothing but darkness is ahead and life is full of demands if they hold on a glimmer of light inevitably appears. It doesn’t mean there are no setbacks and enormous disappointments and sometimes actual devastation. Often they speak of something or someone who allows them to get up and start over again or work those few extra hours even when they are exhausted. That is what Augustine means when he says, ‘give us what you command”.

The month of August is typically a time for vacations and time away from the work a day world. It is not uncommon that we spend some of that time in contemplation. Perhaps it is a time of dreaming about what our lives could be or who might enter our lives as new friends. Sometimes these quiet times put a challenge before us that can seem astronomical. My prayer is that whatever dreams or challenges you may have, you know that the Lord is right there with you. He is the one that creates the longing of our hearts, and He is the one who will sustain. May you know the Lord’s refreshment, renewal and peace in these dog days of summer.

In Christ,

Fr. Kevin Kavanagh

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC?

Adult Faith Formation classes begin soon! The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (formerly RCIA) is more than learning about the faith. It's learning how to LIVE IT. An experience that encompasses the heart, mind, and soul and climaxes with participants becoming Catholic at Easter. Classes begin Tuesday September 10th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and run through early May. Contact Deacon Dave at 937-209-9258 or dbezusko@columbuscatholic.org to sign up or find out more information. All parishioners are welcome to join us to brush up on a particular topic or be a part of the journey as we all dive deeper into our Catholic faith.

BAPTISM CLASS

DID YOU KNOW? In the Rite of Infant Baptism parents are asked THREE TIMES to profess before God and man that they are prepared and committed to raise their child in the Catholic faith. What are you signing up for when you make that profession? How do we, as parents, faithfully live out that commitment? What can you expect on the day you bring your child for Baptism? We'll talk about all of this and more at our next Baptism Preparation Class Saturday, August 24th from 10:00 a.m. to Noon in the Parish Life Center. Contact Deacon Dave at 937-209-9258 or dbezusko@columbuscatholic.org to sign up or find out more information.

PROTECTING GOD'S CHILDREN CLASS

In an ongoing effort to protect children and to provide safe environments for them, the Diocese of Columbus mandates training as well as background checks for all adults working with children in any capacity. Volunteers can complete the Protecting God’s Children Course at any open session within the Diocese. The next course offered at Our Lady of Lourdes will be on Saturday, August 17th at 9:00 am. Online registration is required and can be found at https://www.olol.cc/volunteer.

Any questions can be directed to Anne Daniel in the parish office.

2024 APPEAL

We met our goal of $87,421.06! Many thanks to the 22% of our registered members who made this accomplishment possible! The Appeal is still underway and every dollar raised over our goal amount will be returned to our parish. We are currently looking into replacing some of our interior church lighting that is beginning to fail. If anyone wishes to make an appeal pledge now, any money over our goal will be designated towards this lighting project. Pledges can still be made using the pew envelopes, or online HERE.

For more information about The Appeal, visit the Diocese of Columbus' website HERE. Thank you for your continued support and generosity.

LIFE TEEN YOUTH GROUP

Calling ALL 8th-12th Graders! Want to see what the fun is all about at Life Teen? We are preparing for another fun year filled with Food, Fun activities and Learning what God has in store for us! Our schedule is still coming together but you will be able to find it on the Life Teen website HERE in the coming weeks.

CHOIRS TO RESUME

If you or someone you know loves to sing at Mass and are looking for a way to use this gift for the glory of God, please consider joining one of our choirs. We have a choir for all ages, each of which sings frequently at Mass throughout the year. It is never required to be present at every rehearsal each week, though it certainly is preferred. Resources including recordings are provided to each choir member to accommodate all abilities and schedules. Anyone can join!

1. St. Gregory the Great Choristers – The adult choir (ages 18 and over) sings weekly at Mass, including Christmas and Holy Week. Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

2. St. John Paul II Youth Choir – The youth choir (grades 7-12) sings at the 11:30 a.m. Mass once per month and on Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 7:00-8:00 p.m.

3. St. Cecilia Cherubs – The children’s choir (grades 1-6) sings at the 9:00 a.m. Mass once per month and on Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday, and for the May Crowning. Rehearsals are Sundays from 1:00-1:45 p.m.

4. St. Lazarus Resurrection Choir – This choir sings for funeral Masses, and the choir is notified when they are needed to sing. No rehearsals are necessary for this choir.

5. St. Hildegard Cantors – If singing in a choir is not for you, perhaps you feel called to lead our congregation at Mass as a cantor. All cantors receive rehearsals, recordings, and music to prepare for any Mass they sing.

St. Augustine says “A song is a thing of joy; more profoundly, it is a thing of love.” We hope you might consider joining one of these opportunities in our Music Ministry. If you have any questions, contact Richard Jeric (richard@olol.cc) or visit our website (olol.cc/music-ministry) for more information. The schedules for the Fall for each choir have been posted on the website as well.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY

Wow! I cannot believe we are halfway through 2024! In keeping with this thought, I wanted to share with everyone some financial information concerning your local St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Since this time last year, we have been very blessed that we have not had to conduct fundraisers as St. Vincent de Paul was included in your parish envelope system. Even though there was a mix-up the first few months of the year with the envelopes, we have been receiving your generous donations. Just as we did last year, we will send out a letter with all the necessary information for taxes or personal records after the end of the calendar year. HOWEVER, LET ME TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SAY THANK YOU NOW AND TO GIVE A BRIEF SUMMARY OF HOW YOUR DONATION DOLLARS ARE UTILIZED.

With all our requests for financial assistance, we pray and struggle how to best help others. Sometimes giving them what they ask for isn’t what is best for them. We also work closely with other government and charitable organizations to make sure we are not duplicating services and encouraging someone to go from one organization to another with their “hands out.” Yet we want to help those in need, so pray for us that we do the right thing.

Utilities – We received and paid bills to keep heat and electricity on during the winter months (Jan-Mar) for several people in Marysville. We do not pay the entire bill, but enough that services will not be cut off. We have not paid for these in the summer months because air conditioners and air conditioning costs are programs currently offered explicitly by other organizations.

Hope Center clients – Occasionally, the Hope Center has exhausted their monthly resources for rental and utility assistance and then they reach out to the area churches for assistance. The good part for StVdP is they have already done due diligence to verify everything before they reach out. We have helped several of their clients.

Car expenses – We have paid for three different car repairs this year to keep people working.

Rental assistance – Yes, we pay for this too, but this is a tough one! Rental costs keep rising and for those who are barely making ends meet, who have jobs but then experience a major medical issue, they get behind on rent. We don’t pay for the same person more than once and we try to find them long-term help so this issue doesn’t happen again.

Recently, we received a report that showed in Union County one must earn a minimum of $24.04 per hour, or $50,000 a year, to afford a two-bedroom apartment.

Impact station – We purchased two meals for Impact Station. Since then, we have implemented a system with very generous parishioners, either cooking or buying food for one meal each month.

Food distribution – At the beginning of the year we were spending around $350 each month to supplement a few food staples with the fresh produce we distribute from Mid-Ohio Food Collective. As you know, grocery prices are continually rising, and now, we are spending about $450 each month for the same items. We only provide 4 food items, and a very generous parishioner provides one item also. We prepare on average 100 food boxes each month.

Administrative costs – We only spend about $25 a month. We did purchase a phone from Walmart last year ($45) and have cell service that costs us $16 a month. Additionally, we purchase cardboard boxes and packing tape for transporting bologna sandwiches to Columbus. Recently we received a grant to purchase a cart for our tables for food distribution and an additional iPad for registering people for the food distribution.

We are constantly growing and changing at St. Vincent de Paul and welcome not only your donations and volunteer service time but your ideas and suggestions as well. So please don’t ever hesitate to contact any of the board members listed below.

God bless you all and thank you for your generosity and support.
