Welcome to the March 2015 edition of the
Grief Brief
, the e-newsletter of the Australian Centre for Grief and Berea
vement (
ACGB).
With only one month remaining to register for the international educator tour, I would encourage you to consider attending the workshops to be provided by Dr Louis Gamino. Dr Gamino is at the forefront of bereavement research and offers sound and evidence-based insights, with particular emphasis on ethical practice. A recipient of the Clinical Practice Award from the Association for Death Education and Counseling in 2008, Dr Gamino, using video vignettes from his work with clients, is a skilled communicator of evidence-based clinical interventions.
Dr Robert Neimeyer, prolific author and editor of Death Studies, described Dr Gamino as:
"One part artist, one part ethicist, and 100% clinician, Louis is the consummate scholar practitioner, equally at home in the lecture hall, in the consulting room, or at the bedside of a dying patient. I seek every opportunity to learn from him, and consistently walk away informed, inspired, and invigorated to re-engage the work we share."
Dr Ken Doka, author of
Disenfranchised Grief: Recognising Hidden Sorrow describes Dr Gamino's work as:
"...always on the cutting-edge of grief studies. I have always appreciated his ability to offer evidenced-based clinically sound and helpful work in a most engaging manner. You will not be disappointed - I always learn from him."
Read on below for further information about how you can participate in this rare opportunity to enhance your skills as a bereavement practitioner.

International Educator Tour - Dr Louis A. Gamino (USA)
|
"One part artist, one part ethicist, and 100% clinician, Louis is the consummate scholar practitioner, equally at home in the lecture hall, in the consulting room, or at the bedside of a dying patient."
- Robert A. Neimeyer, PhD
Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney
18th-27th May 2015
NOTE: These workshops can be done consecutively, as part of a two-day program, or separately as individual workshops.
PROGRAM ONE:
Counselling Clients with Complicated Grief
This workshop will explore the assessment of the bereaved client, examining in particular the risk factors, which can complicate the bereavement experience. Drawing upon a number of contemporary theoretical perspectives and using videotape vignettes of actual counselling sessions, this workshop will explore a range of clinical techniques.
PROGRAM TWO:
A Practitioner's Guide to Care of the Dying
This workshop is designed to help medical practitioners and mental health professionals incorporate theoretically sound and empirically derived principles into sensitive and effective care of dying patients and their families. This workshop will examine an assessment strategy, which balances an understanding of the patient's 'life story' and his/her 'end of life story'. The presenter will draw on elements from the dual process model, attachment patterns, grieving styles, contributions of positive psychology, forgiveness/spirituality, and legacy building. Case material and video examples of patient interviews illustrate the counselling principles described.
Full workshop outlines and learning outcomes, alongside dates, locations, rates and registration information can be found at www.grief.org.au/education/gamino

Bereavement Practice for Clinicians and Service Proviers
|
In the Summer 2015 edition of Bereavement Practice for Clinicians and Service Providers the feature article looks at endings in the context of grief counselling. While endings are often defined by funding or agency criteria, this article focuses more on 'good enough' endings and ways both client and therapist can benefit from a mindful end to therapeutic work.
Alongside the feature article, we have also included information on our upcoming International Educator Tour (Dr Louis A. Gamino, USA); a featured resource; and part two of our list of useful online bereavement resources that may assist in your work.

Upcoming Workshop in Victoria
|
Supporting the Suicide Bereaved
presented by Greg Roberts
Tuesday, 5th May 2015
The issue of suicide continues to raise feelings of fear, doubt and confusion (among other feelings) in our society. Research indicates that people bereaved through suicide are at greater risk of suicide themselves. In contrast to this, many people bereaved through suicide become the greatest advocates for suicide prevention strategies in our community.
This workshop will lead participants through a brief history of how our society has responded to suicide and consider the ways in which this influences how we respond to the needs of those bereaved through suicide today. The notion of effective grief and bereavement support as a suicide prevention strategy will be explored, with strategies offered to re-enforce this idea. The workshop will engage participants in understanding the particular issues and questions that arise for those bereaved through suicide and the ways in which they can be addressed.
Registrations Close:
Tuesday, 21st April 2015.

Mum Moments - Journey Through Grief
By Judy Taylor
When Judy's mother died she was thrown into a new world of emotions. She found herself on a raw and confronting roller coaster of feelings which completely took her by surprise and, at times, overwhelmed her.
By writing her feelings down, no matter how raw or painful, she found a way to ride those waves of grief. Then, as she shared her journal with friends and colleagues, she was touched that her words had a profound healing affect on those dealing with the death of a loved one. Judy's book gives you permission to feel.
"Judy's book is a window into the usually private and intimate experience of sudden loss. The need to make sense of a sudden loss is often an overwhelming impulse and this effortful process can be helped through the written word. Judy's book provides a very personal insight and underlines the importance of finding meaning in the wake of loss." - Christopher Hall, CEO. Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement.
The Mum Moments - Journey Through Grief journal is available in paperback and Ebook for $19.95. Click here to order/download your copy today!
