Nature prescriptions and Indigenous peoples: A qualitative inquiry in the Northwest Territories, Canada

​Nature prescription programs are becoming more common within healthcare settings and facilities. Despite the health benefits of being in nature, nature prescriptions within the context of Indigenous Peoples have received little attention. Researchers Nicole Redver, Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Sarah Tonkin-Crine went out to answer the following question: What are circumpolar-based physicians’ and Indigenous Elders’ views on nature prescribing in the Northwest Territories, Canada?

INESSS recommends Quebec switch surgery anesthetic to reduce carbon footprint

The Gazette


Anesthesia using desflurane gas has a carbon footprint about 40 times higher than sevoflurane, when taking into account its potency and the 20-year global warming potential, or GWP-20.



The Ministry of Health and Social Services has given INESSS the mandate to formulate recommendations on the best clinical practices to reduce the carbon footprint of general inhalation anesthesia without compromising the safety of care. The ministry made the request following a request from Quebec’s association of anesthesiologists.

Canada's push against greenwashing is working

Efforts to stop companies from spreading misinformation in Canada about their impact on the climate and environment appear to be taking hold. The Pathways Alliance, a coalition of Canada's six largest fossil fuel producers, cleared its website and social media channels on Wednesday, blaming Bill C-59


The decision is a "potential watershed moment for corporate accountability in Canada," and "demonstrates the far-reaching impact of this modest provision requiring truth in advertising even before its passage," said Leah Temper, health and economic policy program director at the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment.

Heroes: how these Swiss seniors won first-ever climate case in international court

Heat-related deaths have spiked by roughly 30% in Europe over the last two decades. A group of older Swiss women successfully argued their government wasn't doing enough to protect them.


European Court of Human Rights ruled in favour of a group of 2,400 older Swiss women who argued that the government was putting them at greater risk of dying during heat waves by not doing enough to combat climate change.


Nine years after they began their battle, the women made legal history, winning the first ever climate case in an international court.

UK study finds growing support for plant-based hospital meals

The study of 2,000 adults revealed that while 79% have sympathy for the NHS in its current state, 55% believe something needs to change when it comes to the meals served.


Being more environmentally friendly, healthier and more inclusive to different cultures and beliefs were some of the best benefits to a meat-free menu in hospitals, according to respondents. Meanwhile, 25% think it could help encourage healthy eating once home from hospital.

Medically tailored meals show promise for reducing healthcare costs

According to new research looking at every U.S. state, programs that deliver medically tailored meals (MTMs) to people with diet-sensitive conditions such as diabetes and heart disease along with limitations in the ability to perform daily activities could lead to substantial savings in healthcare costs. Using computer models to estimate the benefits of such programs minus the expense of implementing them, researchers found significant variation between U.S. states but an overall net cost savings in almost every state.

How to accelerate Canada’s clean energy transition? Treat it like health care

Canada, with 80% non-emitting electricity from hydropower, needs to expand and modernize its power grids to meet its clean energy goals. The federal government is preparing regulations and investment tax credits while respecting provincial authority, but alignment of energy and climate policies is crucial. Developing comprehensive provincial net zero energy road maps is essential, and the Electricity Advisory Council suggests making these road maps a condition for federal funding to ensure progress towards net zero by 2050.

Do you know about floating photovoltaic solar energy?

Solar photovoltaic energy is one of the most important and well-established renewable energy sources.


For the past few years, floating solar PV has been gaining ground, which, according to the World Bank, could double installed capacity. At the moment, it has gone from 61 MW in 2015 to more than 3 GW in 2021, with 688 MW added in 2020 alone.


According to the World Bank, floating solar power could double the existing installed capacity of solar power.

Manitoba announces $4,000 provincial EV purchase rebate

Electric vehicle sales in Manitoba may see a boost following the announcement of a $4,000 provincial rebate for new EVs and $2,500 for used EVs.



Manitoba is the seventh province in Canada to offer an EV rebate, which is stackable with the $5,000 federal rebate. Just Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta do not offer an incentive.

Squamish First Nation is trying out Lime electric bikes this summer

This summer, the Squamish Nation is trying out a fleet of electric Lime bikes.

It’s being made possible by a new partnership between the First Nation community and shared micro-mobility provider Lime to offer a safer, cleaner and more affordable way to travel. The Squamish Nation (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw) is located in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia.
