Message from the President

Unleash Your Radiance!

In a recent meeting I attended, council members spent time coordinating our “year at a glance” calendar. We were laying out the plans for the various activities of our church. Later I found myself reflecting upon the Lutheran rite of Baptism and my favorite line; “Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Many authors, both Christian and secular, write about the light that resides in each of us. That light that shines through our individual cracks. The power of the light we carry lies in its ability to transform ourselves and those around us.

Each of us carries a light within us. This light can be understood as our inner goodness, authenticity, love, wisdom and unique gifts we bring to the world. How we use the light, many times, was formed in our childhood and modeled by the important adults around us. My parents modeled using their light by serving their church, the schools my sister and I attended and the community in which we lived. By doing so, their servant attitudes paired with joyful hearts allowed their lights to shine! They would be pleased to witness their legacy continues.

None of us navigates the world alone. We may believe in our darkest moments we are by ourselves, but we are not. We walk this journey with many others. How we choose to share our light effects that journey. We can use our voice for good or we can tear others down. It is a hard lesson learned to realize that we never truly lift ourselves up by tearing someone down. In my own home church I witness several women carrying lights so bright, hearts so big, and a love so grand, they cannot help share all of their blessings with us. It is a gift to have these women as friends but even more so to have them as mentors! Who needs your light today? Someone does, of that I am most certain.

In today’s world it is so easy to dwell on what is bad, what is wrong, what is frightening. However, throughout history good eventually prevails! We are charged to march on and create a world, a space and relationships that reflect the love we have for Christ. In our liturgical readings throughout the month of August, the wisdom of God is revealed to us through the actions of Jesus Christ. He fed his people both spiritually and physically. The Women of the ELCA need to transform our spiritual hunger into action! A friend told me we need to become “spiritually hangry”. Using the light within us to bring good into the world involves a combination of self-awareness, empathy, and intentional action. By consistently acting with love, kindness, and integrity, your inner light can inspire and uplift others, creating a ripple effect of goodness in the world. How do you shine your light? To what efforts will it shine upon?

When we shine our light, we inspire others to do the same! This creates a chain reaction where people feel empowered to bring their best selves forward contributing to a more compassionate, loving and connected world.

“This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine!”

Blessings,

Lisa Lopez

Board Member Spotlight:

Debra Schmidt

Hello WELCA family! My name is Debra Schmidt. This month I am going to tell you a little about myself and the way we look at families and their little miracles.

I was born in Sinton and grew up in San Antonio. I met my husband when he escorted me in the Miss Fort Sam Houston pageant. I tell people he just kept escorting me down the aisle. He was in the military and we traveled up and down the east coast and to Japan. I was able to see many parts of the world. We were married almost 35 years and raised 3 beautiful children, two boys and one girl which have given us 4 wonderful grandchildren. In January of 2008 the good Lord decided it was time for him to enter his heavenly home.

I have worked in many different jobs, first as a cosmetologist then raised my children. I then drove a school bus and went on to the city bus. I worked with the city of Bloomington, Indiana for 26 years as a driver of 40-foot buses and then the training supervisor. I taught people about defensive driving, emergency management and customer relations. I also helped people get their commercial license. I’ve always loved helping people and hope to continue helping whenever someone needs me to.

When it was the time for me to retire, I came back home to Texas. Here I am with all my children and grandchildren. Home is where the heart is and my heart is here in Texas with my family.

Now that you know who I am, let me tell you why this month of September has a special meaning form me. This month is Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Awareness, also known as NICU. Most have heard about the NICU either having a baby in the NICU or knowing someone who has had a baby in the unit. This is a tough subject for me to talk about because I have recently experienced this with my latest grandson.

It is hard on a mother and the whole family when life is brought into this world, especially when that little life is taken away by a special team to be worked on non-stop to give these special lives a chance to live a full life. Some of these babies may just need a short time in the NICU because they were born a few weeks early and are underweight or maybe they are a twin or triplet. Others have to spend months or even years in the NICU. My grandson was fortunate to only be in the NICU for 3 months, but it still has a long affect on the family. Some of the conditions that keep babies in the NICU longer are; brain bleeds, trouble with breathing, heart problems, infections birth defects, and many more.

There might be days that you may see families out and about with their babies. If you ask how old they are, you might not believe the age a family member tells you. The baby is older than you might think because the baby has had a rough start in life. The family has gone through a very rough time seeing their child fight to stay with them. I have come to see things in a new light when I see a family with a new baby. You can never judge a book by its cover since we never know what the family has gone through or what the child had endured. We are all children of God but there are some that just need a few more prayers and love, not just from the immediate family but from the community.

God answers our prayers. I am a witness to the good that prayers can do. Many people were praying for my grandson and those prayers were answered. He is growing healthier every day. Checkups are going well and he is a happy little fellow. He is our little miracle and I know that there are many more miracles all over the world. Please continue to pray for these families and babies, they all need us. Also please remember in your prayers the special nurses and doctors that take care of these little miracles.

God Bless You All,

Debra (Deborah) Schmidt

God invites us to be in community with God and others. Faith practices are regularly repeated practices that can, both personally and communally, enrich our attentiveness to the Holy Spirit, cultivate the life and character of Jesus Christ in us, and strengthen our love for God and others. These practices equip us to serve God and our neighbor better.

We will begin this Faith Practice via Zoom the week of September 9th. We invite all, including families with kids, to participate in this meaningful practice.
