The Golden Games Are Coming Next Week!
They’ve spent a lifetime training, competing, and winning gold, bronze, and silver medals. Now, on August 21–23, current and retired athletes ages 45 and above will compete in the first-ever Golden Games! Special Olympics Chicago/Special Children’s Charities and the Chicago Park District will join forces to host this three-day mix of sports competitions and social activities celebrating these athletes–some of which have been competing since the very first games in 1968!

Sporting events include Bowling, Track and Field, Basketball Skills, Softball Skills, Bocce, Fishing, Archery, and Adaptive Bicycles. Social activities will include picnics, a Chicago White Sox game, an evening reception dinner dance, and shared meals. Athletes and coaches will stay at the Hilton Chicago throughout Golden Games.
We are thrilled to sponsor all of these activities so they can be free for participants and coaches. Stay tuned to our social media channels for highlights from the event!

Athletes in Action
Our athletes have had a busy month with tons of exciting activities, classes, competitions, and events! Check out some highlights of their summer fun!

Adventure Club
Summer is coming to and end, and so has this season of Adventure Club. We love providing athletes the opportunity to try new activities like fishing, archery, and kayaking.
We visited Northerly Island to help athletes from Kosciuszko Park, Marquette Park, and Piotrowski Park reel in fish, hit bullseyes, and get out on the water. It was a beautiful and fun-filled day, and we already can't wait until next summer!

Intramural Kickball Championships
The stands were packed at Little Cubs Field in Humboldt Park on August 3 to watch two amazing competitions–The Minor League Championship for athletes 8–15 years old and the Major League Championship for athletes 16 and older.
Congratulations to Kosciuszko Park, who became the Minor League champions and Shabbona Park, who became this year's Major League champions.

Theater Camp with A.B.L.E.
Last week, a group of athletes came to Welles Park to participate in drama camp with A.B.L.E. Each day our athletes engaged in different types of theater games and activities which allowed them to get creative, work together, and have fun!
A.B.L.E. stands for Artists Breaking Limits & Expectation, and it is an organization that specializes in creating performance opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

CAN TV Accomplishments
Four CAN-TV crew members completed their three day training to learn editing in the studio. These athletes learned so much and were able to create their own video, including credits, music, and the actual film. The next taping will be August 25.
From left, they are: Frederick, Carter, Jim, William, and Allison.
Many thanks to Jim Knightwright for his patience and expertise and for teaching our athletes how to edit the film.

Our athletes had a great time Saturday night watching the PINK concert from one of the Wrigley Rooftops. A special thanks to Matt O'Shea for hosting this FUNdraiser and to Mayor Johnson for stopping in and saying hello to our athletes and guests!

Camping at Northerly Island
Last weekend, 10 of our families joined the Chicago Park District for a special camping night just for them! They enjoyed rock climbing at Maggie Daley, then headed to Northerly Island for fishing, a campfire cookout with songs, and stargazing before sleeping under the stars. What a fun way to spend the night as we head toward the end of summer!

Our featured artwork for the month of August is “Bocce” by Kenneth Ogden of Vittum Park. Kenneth’s artwork shows people enjoying all the fun of our annual bocce competition. Athletes are playing a game of bocce while others are visiting a food stand, hanging out under a tent, and receiving their medals! We can't wait for this fun event coming up on September 23! Thank you, Kenneth. | |
