ANTIOCHIAN VILLAGE CAMP

March 2024

AN UPDATE FROM THE ANTIOCHIAN VILLAGE

March 19 - Metropolitan PHILIP's 10-year anniversary of his repose

March 19, 2024 marked the 10-year anniversary of the repose of our beloved Metropolitan PHILIP of thrice blessed memory.

As we well know, Metropolitan PHILIP established the Antiochian Village, along with so many other organizations and departments in our Archdiocese. Leading our Archdiocese for more than 40 years, he did so much for so many and left a lasting impact on Orthodox Christianity in North America.

Every session our campers do a trisagion service to remember him, Bishop ANTOUN. and Fr. John Namie. We constantly ask for their Heavenly prayers. Memory eternal Metropolitan PHILIP!

March is Women's Month

March is Women's Month in the Antiochian Archdiocese, and we want to honor and thank the amazing women who volunteer their time and talents here at the camp.

Week 1 - Aunt Sadie & Aunt Janet

(the kitchen warriors)

They both give so much of their time and talents throughout the year working 16 hour days running the kitchen to make sure we are fed at all of our programs. They can also be found playing kazoos while they make the food!

Week 2 - Nurse Deena, Aunt Julie, & Dr. Elaina

(the health center heroes)

Along with several other nurses, doctors, and healthcare professionals, these women volunteer in our health center during the summer to make sure camp is possible.

Week 3 - Kh. Sophia Shadid & Maria Scott (the camp wives)

They sacrifice so much and give much of their time, energy, and talents to the staff and campers,

most of which nobody sees.

They both do cabin times, take walks with staff members, and offer a strong female presence to our camp family. Sophia is sharing her talents by helping establish a sensory room and sensory needs program for summer camp, and Maria gives us lots of great design ideas with her graphic design eye. They also sacrifice by giving up so much time with their husbands throughout the year.

They also make sure Luke, Nina, Nora, Belle, Louie, and Minnie are fed and ready to play with all the staff and campers.

AV would not be what it is without them!

. . . Stay tuned for Week 4!

Same Place - New Name . . .

Aunt Pearl's Place

Our Health Center has a new name in memory of Aunt Pearl, our first camp nurse and one of the pioneers of AV!

Aunt Pearl passed away in 2023 (Memory eternal!), and she cared for generations of campers and staff. It is only fitting to name our health center in honor of her, after the many years of selfless service and love she offered to so many.

Tri-State Recap

Tri-State Camping Conference

Last week our year-round staff (along with Khalil Samara of the Dept of Camping and Peter Bondi from Camp Transfiguration in Quebec) had the opportunity to attend the Tri-State Camping Conference held in Atlantic City, NJ, the largest camping conference in the world!

We attended sessions on topics from staff training to sensory room implementation to legal issues related to camping. We are excited to implement what we learned this summer!

Juzdan Gear

We want to shout out Juzdan Gear - owned by AV alum George Juzdan from St. George Orthodox Church in Little Falls, NJ! George is one of our favorite vendors for Namie's Nook, as well as many other t-shirts, he always helps us get great deals to keep merch affordable, and he comes from the Juzdan family - all of whom have done so much for AV!

Campers, make sure to check out the merch from Juzdan Gear this summer!

And if you're looking for merch for your parish or group - check out Juzdan Gear!

Coffee

Weeeee're getting coffee!

Hey coffee lovers...we now have a perfect gift for anyone who loves coffee and AV.

Ongoing Projects

Namie Hall

Renovation on Namie Hall is well underway! The new siding, windows and roof are done and they are installing HVAC as you read this. We can't wait to be able to use this space to hold events, host guest speakers, and more.

Thank you so much to those who have contributed to this project and made this transformation possible!

Dining Hall Floor

The Dining Hall is getting a new floor! The work is being done by Asia Carpets, owned by "Uncle Eddie" Lesoon from St. George Cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA. Fun fact - his children all attended AV as campers, and he has daughters who attended the camp before we bought it while it was still a Presbyterian camp!

Sports Shed

The Sports Shed (old office) got a facelift last month. New siding, doors, roof, and windows make this place look like it did back in the 1940's - new! Don't worry alumni - we have a few old pieces of it left for you to take home.

Should we put a payphone on the front of it?!

Volunteer Cabins

After over 20 years of housing our volunteers, the Volunteer Cabins are getting some much needed TLC. Camp wouldn't be what it is without these selfless servants, so we want to make their stay a little more comfortable. Stay tuned for the finished product!

Kitchen Manager Needed!

Kitchen Manager - With so many programs and guest groups throughout the year, we are in need of someone to join our year-round team and run the AV Camp kitchen.

If you or someone you know are interested in either position please email frchris@avcamp.org.

RELIVE AV MEMORIES!

Hey AV Alumni! Do you love flipping through our photo albums when you come to visit? Well our Director of Communications Constantine Kallaur has spent the last year scanning all of our photos from our photo collection going all the way back to 1981! In an effort to preserve the history of The Antiochian Village, we are in the process of digitizing as much content as we have. God willing, we'll have every session video going back to the 1990's online in the near future as well.

Check out our SmugMug photo-site below to re-live the AV memories!
