Parents and Families: Welcome to Marist!

Welcome to The Gatehouse — a newsletter for Marist parents and families that highlights resources available to students, provides insight into the Marist experience, and keeps you informed of important deadlines and events.

Welcome 2027 Red Fox Families!

Class of 2027 families, we are so excited to have you as part of our Red Fox Family! We hope The Gatehouse becomes a valuable resource for you. Many parents read this newsletter to learn about all of the campus resources, events, and academic opportunities that are available to your student. You might mention important items to your student or start a conversation about campus events.

The Common Read

2023-2024 Common Read

The 2023-2024 Common Read is Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants

Braiding Sweetgrass is a nonfiction book that consists of essays that reflect upon nature through Kimmerer’s perspective as an Indigenous woman, a trained botanist, a loving mother, and a dedicated professor. Through personal anecdotes, scientific observations, and cultural storytelling, Kimmerer calls readers to pay more attention to how we relate to and care for the environment.

As you may know, the Common Read is incorporated into our students’ first-year experience. Students are asked to complete the common reading prior to arriving on campus in the fall. They then write an essay on the Common Read in their First Year Seminar, and are also encouraged to participate in related co-curriculars connected to the text.

Braiding Sweetgrass will no doubt help us as a college community to engage with one another in meaningful conversations about Indigenous histories and identities, varying ways of understanding the world, the value of the environment, and the importance of environmental advocacy.

Keep up with Career Services

Getting off on the Right Foot

The Center for Career Services team encourages all students to engage with them and their digital resources early and often during their time at Marist. It's never too early for students to learn how their interests and passions can turn into long-term career aspirations. We recommend first-year students take advantage of the following Career Services resources.

Career Coaching Appointments: Career coaches can meet one-on-one with first-year students to develop and implement a personalized four-year career plan for them based on their major and other interests. Students can schedule appointments for career advising, making employer and alumni connections, creating a LinkedIn profile, cover letter or résumé reviews, and more areas of professional development using their Handshake account (when they log in with their MyMarist information).

Major and Career Planning Assistance: Many students who seek assistance from the Career Services team early in their time at Marist tend to be undecided on their major and career paths.

Career Fairs and Other Networking Events: The Center for Career Services holds career and internship fairs to introduce students to opportunities they might not know exist and build relationships with hiring managers from a wide variety of companies. Marist alumni attend these fairs or host their own individual information sessions for their company when they are hiring for jobs, internships, leadership programs, or other opportunities.

Stay connected with the Marist College Center for Career Services by following it on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram. Students with questions can email career.services@marist.edu.

Family to Family Advice

Words of Wisdom from Current Parents

"Have faith in Marist. It is a bit overwhelming sending your child off into the unknown and giving up oversight of his or her daily life. Marist truly does an amazing job at making sure that all of the first-year students are successful. Nothing is left to chance. They communicate and then remind and sometimes remind again regarding all of the important details (kind of like mom...). There are resources aplenty and there are so many clubs, organizations, and activities that every student almost immediately finds a way to be a part of the community. So do not worry, your kid is in good hands!"
