May 2021 Edition
A newsletter for the car enthusiast!

From the Desk of Darrel Burnett
Executive Director

This past Saturday’s running of the 147th Kentucky Derby is evidence that the month of May is off to a very fast start with the promise of getting neck snapping fast as the month tapers to a close. As much as I love and admire horsepower in the four-legged form as beautifully demonstrated by winner Medina Spirit in the Derby, I’m an even bigger fan of the horsepower that launches four wheels. With the weather getting nicer and nicer with each passing day, those horses are itching to get out and run too!
One of those thoroughbreds left the barn this past Saturday morning at 9 AM when the 609-horsepower 1965 Pontiac GTO, owned by our friends at Rawhide Boys Ranch, was loaded on the transporter headed for the Mecum Auction in Indianapolis May 14th – 22nd

Though we’re sad to see it go, we’re happy that the proceeds from the sale of the GTO will help fund the great programs for young men at Rawhide. I’ll be watching right along with a national television audience that day and rooting for the GTO to attract a huge number before the auctioneer drops the gavel.
Indianapolis is also the scene for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, the 105th running of the Indianapolis 500, on May 30th. COVID forced a fan-less and fun-less 500 last August but, like the rest of us, the 500 is getting a shot in the arm and is back in its rightful place at the end of May with 40% of the spectators invited back.
If you would like to learn more about the history of the 500 then look no farther than The Automobile Gallery where we have a 2001 Indy Car among our collection of nearly 130 vehicles. The Steering Column this month marks the 20th anniversary of its glorious appearance in the 500 and its chase for the checkered flag. I promise it will make for some fast reading!
Don’t miss Darrel Burnett’s Steering Column coming to an inbox near you May 14th. This month Life at 225 Miles Per Hour!

Getting The GTO Ready
For The Mecum Auction!
This week we say a fond farewell to the 1965 GTO we have had on display on behalf of Rawhide Boys Ranch since 2020. While we hated to see it leave Saturday morning, we are happy because it is leaving for the Mecum Auction in Indianapolis May 14th - May 22nd.

Rawhide's GTO is scheduled to cross the block at 11:30am on Saturday, May 15th on national television with proceeds supporting the great work Rawhide Boys Ranch does on behalf of troubled youth at Rawhide Boys Ranch.

Thanks to the great work of our pit crew, the GTO is a shining example of the great automobiles we have on display at The Automobile Gallery. Thank you Pit Crew, you do outstanding work and will make us proud in Indy!
Another New Arrival!
We thrilled to announce the second of the four cars that we received from the Wallach Family Collection. This car is now on display at The Automobile Gallery.

Come on down to see this very rare 1937 Chrysler Airflow

Thank you to the Wallach Family for entrusting your collection with us!
