Fall offers More than Deer Hunting
Musky fishing heats up in the fall and Pomme de Terre is the place to catch one. (Brandon Butler photo)

Archery season is open and I haven't screwed the broad heads on my arrows yet. This is strange, to say the least.
The excitement of the first day of deer season has surpassed that of Christmas for me since I was about 12. Now, staring 40 in the face, I recognize I've been missing out on a lot of other outdoor opportunities by being hyper-focused on a single species for most of my life. So this year, I'm going to approach fall with greater perspective and spread out my pursuits across a diversity of adventures.

Certified Wildlife Habitat®

Recognize your commitment to wildlife and certify your yard, balcony container garden, schoolyard, work landscape or roadside greenspace into a    Certified Wildlife Habitat®
By creating a natural garden with native plants, you are providing essential elements of wildlife habitat: food, water, cover and a place for wildlife to raise their young. Add a water source - such as a birdbath - and follow sustainable gardening practices, and your garden will not only be wildlife-friendly, but it will qualify as a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat®.

In addition, a portion of your application processing fee supports the Conservation Federation of Missouri and the National Wildlife Federation's programs to inspire others to make a difference and address declining habitat for bees, butterflies, birds, amphibians and other wildlife. The fee is waived for schools.

Affiliate Summit Highlights

The 5th annual Affiliate Summit was held September 13-14th at the Lake of the Ozarks. CFM welcomed representatives from 30 different affiliate organizations to learn, share and network.

The workshop provided affiliates with grant writing training, social media tips, upcoming grant opportunities, ideas how to engage youth in conservation organizations, information to engage in the resolutions process and so much more.

In addition to the informational sessions, the event gives affiliates the opportunity to network and learn from each other. If your organization did not send a representative, consider doing so next year. Reach out to the affiliates who attended to learn more about how the workshop might benefit your organization.

Thank you to our sponsors: Bass Pro Shops, Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation, Pure Air Natives and the National Wildlife Federation. Contact Michelle Gabelsberger at for more information.

CWD Testing
Interested in volunteering to work at a CWD testing station opening weekend?

Kevyn Wiskirchen, incident commander for the MDC mandatory CWD Check stations, has extended an offer to CFM members willing to volunteer some time.  This is for the opening weekend of the Missouri firearms deer season, November 10 & 11.

There are 61 stations, spread out among the 31 counties in which testing is mandatory for deer taken in those counties on opening weekend. Detail about those locations can be found here:
With a couple of years under their belt the operation is well established and pretty smooth.  They expect to be able to handle all activities with just MDC employees, but volunteers take some of the pressure off and free up more MDC folks to deal with inevitable unanticipated things that always pop up. Plus it helps create more people who really understand the CWD situation and can help spread the word.

Volunteers can help out for as short or long as you like - an hour, a morning, an afternoon, whatever they are comfortable with.  Hard-core volunteers willing to commit the full two days from 7:30AM - 8PM may be assigned to what they call "mission critical" roles, and could even get some training if they volunteer early enough.
This of course would be a big ask of anyone planning to deer hunt opening weekend - but maybe a few of you bow hunters will already have the freezer topped off by then.
If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Kevyn Wiskirchen at the MDC:
