Youth Turkey Harvest Way Down, But Spirits Up
Bruce Sassmann and Callen Taylor pose with the turkey Callen took at Bruce's Prairie Star Restoration Farm

Youth turkey season was pretty tough this year. Cold weather and a late spring made for a challenging two-day hunt. It was all the way down to 19 degrees on Saturday morning where we were hunting in central Missouri. Kids were bundled up like it was a late season deer hunt. But youth hunting isn't about just killing turkeys. Primarily, it's designed as a time to learn. For both the youths and adults.
According to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), youth turkey hunters killed 1,723 turkeys during the two-day 2018 spring youth season, April 7-8. This number is way down from previous years, including last year when youth hunters killed a little over 4,000 turkeys.
