This year, The Girls Club of Los Angeles is commemorating Black History Month by sharing photos and quotes of the giants whose shoulders we stand upon. We urge you to join us on social media and share the quotes with your children, families, students, and clients. It is important that we keep the memories and contributions alive by lifting them up with our voices and attention.

The next century of Black History is being written today. The next generation of black scientists, civic leaders, spiritualists, athletes, doctors, inventors, and entertainers who will shape the future of human history are in our classrooms today. They need us to continue supporting them and reminding them of the greatness that preceded them and resides within them.

The beauty of our world today is that nearly everyone has access to all of the world's collected knowledge, wisdom, data, and statistics in the palm of their hands. With the flick of a finger, a child can hear the words of Dr. King, Malcolm X, or Maya Angelou. One can read the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington. The challenge lies in the fact that in that same device sits access to every distraction or deviance that has ever been imagined. This is why curating, cultivating, and commemorating our history is so important. It is easy for the good, worthwhile, and timeless to get lost in the vast ocean of digital everything.

Keeping Black History alive is more than a click in our browser; it is an ongoing conversation with our present and future. To assist you and your loved ones with moving us forward, we have cultivated some websites to spark discussion in your family.

Girls Club of Los Angeles Welcomes LA Sparks’ Very Own, Zia Cooke

In late January, Zia Cooke, Guard for LA Sparks, joined the Girls Club of Los Angeles team in their Food Sharing effort. Combined, the team served over 300 grocery bags.

“I’m giving back to the community. We have a long line out here, beautiful people coming together to make the community a better place,” said Zia as she handed community residents grocery bags. Zia Cooke was the number 10 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA draft.

This collaboration would not have been possible without the help of Leo Li, LA Sparks’

Coordinator, Community Relations & Youth Sports. Leo reached out to GCLA after seeing the Food Share program on social media.

“This is a social justice effort, and we are very happy to be part of it,” said Nicole White, Senior Vice President of the Los Angeles.

“This type of collaboration creates immediate impact because the community sees organization leaders and sports figures such as Ms. Cooke, roll their sleeves and serve the people,” said Gloria Davis, Executive Director of Girls Club of Los Angeles.

Key Election Dates

Feb. 20, 2024, was the deadline to register online to vote in the March 5 primary election. However, if you missed that deadline, you can do same-day registration at any vote center in your county once they open, all the way up to and including Election Day.
When you register to vote after Feb. 20, that means you will register "conditionally" and will cast a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots are placed in pink envelopes, secured for processing, and counted after election officials have confirmed your voter information.

Girls Club of Los Angeles Welcomes Nursing Interns from Charles Drew University (CDU) of Medicine and Science

Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA) is once again hosting over a dozen interns from Charles Drew Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. This is the 4th cohort of Nursing Interns that continues the collaboration between GCLA and CDU. The internship begins in Early February and ends in late April.

All interns are either completing their undergraduate degree in nursing and form the Public Health Session or graduate level and form the Population Health Sessions. Both levels enable the students to join GCLA and support our community programming. Some student interns will assist teachers with health checks of young children, observe play, and learn about tools used to assess children’s growth.

Several interns will have hands-on experience during our Food Share Program on Wednesdays. They will sort, bag, and distribute over 250 grocery bags to families while engaging participants in health screenings. They will assist clients with high blood pressure, stress management, healthy eating, and glucose monitoring. They will provide resources and referrals to critical programs that can further support participants.

“This collaboration is very much aligned to our mission of social justice and CDU’s mission of dedication to social justice and equity for underserved populations,” said Gloria Davis, Executive Director.

Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA) acoge una vez más a más de una docena de pasantes de la Universidad Charles Drew de Medicina y Ciencias Charles Drew. Este es el cuarto grupo de pasantes de enfermería que forman la colaboración entre GCLA y CDU. La pasantía comienza a principios de febrero y finaliza a finales de abril.

Girls Club of Los Angeles publicly launches the Early Learning Expansion Network!

Last year, The Girls Club of Los Angeles launched The Early Learning Expansion Network (ELEN). ELEN is focused on bolstering family home and center-based childcare providers in South Los Angeles. The program provides facilities with access to resources, training, and subsidized childcare payments. The program assists the community at large by providing working parents who qualify for subsidies with high-quality child care and early education for their children.

Family Child Care Homes and Child Care Centers offer age-appropriate developmental and educational experiences for children from birth to 12 years old. Working with ELEN gives smaller providers access to support, capital, and best practices to upgrade their staff and facilities. Qualifying programs also provide community resources and services to the families. The ongoing training, resources, onsite consultations, and monthly meetings strengthen Child Care Providers, who are then able to pour into the care and nurturing of our next generation.

The Early Learning Expansion Network held its first meeting of 2024 on January 31, 2024. Approximately 32 Providers were in attendance. The Meeting taught childcare providers how to find support staff along with effective ways to market the Family Child Care Home and provided an introduction to the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) child portfolio. The DRDP is an assessment to measure the learning and progress of individual children in early care and early childhood education programs. One of the attendees, Ms. Secela, owner and operator of Kids Kan Learning Academy Family Child Care, stated, “The meeting last evening was very informative. I am glad I was able to attend.” Ms. Secela also shared that she was delighted to connect with other childcare providers who offered her assistance with hiring new staff.

El año pasado, The Girls Club of Los Angeles lanzó The Early Learning Expansion Network (ELEN). Youth Spotlight: Karol Pastrana-Cano

We are excited to spotlight our newest team member, Karol Pastrana-Cano. Karol began his relationship with The Girls Club of Los Angeles through our youth program, Project LEAYD. Karol is part of the cohort convened at Teach TECH High School. Karol forged a great relationship with the Project LEAYD team and stayed connected. This past summer, Karol was hired as a youth worker. He was placed in Faith Children’s Center, where he blossomed and began considering changing his college major to education.

Once Karol completed the allotted hours through the youth worker program, he continued to work for GCLA as a volunteer. He has become a vital team member, and the teachers depend on him. His consistency and commitment have been displayed in his work ethic, and because of this, Karol was officially hired as a part-time employee of GCLA. He is a true example of dedication and commitment to service.

Estamos emocionados de destacar a nuestro nuevo miembro del equipo, Karol Pastrana-Cano. Karol inició su relación con The Girls Club of Los Angeles a través de nuestro programa juvenil, Proyecto LEAYD. Karol es parte de la cohorte convocada en Teach TECH High School. Karol forjó una excelente relación con el equipo del Proyecto LEAYD y se mantuvo conectado. El verano pasado, Karol fue contratado como trabajador juvenil. Lo colocaron en Faith Children's Center, donde floreció y comenzó a considerar cambiar su especialización universitaria a educación.

January Food Share Highlights

The Girls Club of Los Angeles is proud of the service the Food Share Program provides the community. Every Wednesday, The Food Share Program coordinates a team of volunteers and staff to provide food, PPE, and other life-preserving items for individuals and families in need.

Working closely with their partners, Food Forward, Greater New Bethel Church, and The Peoples Project powered by LA Fed, GCLA is able to provide a balanced diet for those in need. A typical bag of groceries includes meat, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and shelf staples.

The Girls Club Food Share program happens every Wednesday at the GCLA Headquarters located at 2057 W. Century Boulevard in Los Angeles. Do you have a yearning to serve the community? Are you a person who loves the feeling of heartfelt gratitude? Are you willing to take a COVID Test and work on a team to accomplish something greater than yourself? If you answered yes to these questions we would love to speak with you!

GCLA is asking for volunteers to help us Wednesday mornings with our community food distribution program. Volunteers will sort, pack, and distribute food for members of the surrounding community. Our team of staff and volunteers maintain a warm, welcoming environment to help provide a caring safety net for those who need it most.

The schedule is Wednesday Mornings from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. All volunteers will receive free masks, gloves, and COVID tests. The requirements are Proof of Covid-19 vaccination, the ability to work with a team, and taking a COVID-19 rapid test onsite.
