Animal Spotlight:

Mossey

Mossey is a super sweet 7-year-old male. He was loved by his family but unfortunately, they had a new baby in the house that was allergic to cats. His previous owner let us know that he has lived with other cats and dogs and got along with both. He loves to lay in the sunshine and would spend time lounging next to the windows. When he is ready to be pet, he will jump in your lap to get some love.

Mossey was also good at letting his owners know when the baby was upset by meowing loudly when the baby cried. Coming in at just over 20lbs, his new family will hopefully help Mossey lose a little weight so he can be ready to jump into their laps and hearts.

Stinking Cool Facts About Dog Noses

  1. Dogs' sense of smell is 10,000 and 100,000 times better than humans.
  2. Dogs can breathe in and out at the same time.
  3. Dogs can smell the passage of time. They can detect the tiny reductions of odor molecules that occur over short periods. This allows tracking dogs to determine which direction a person or animal has gone by sniffing the ground.
  4. Dogs smell in 3D. Just as our eyes compile two slightly different views of the world. Dogs can smell separately with each nostril. Their brain combines the different odor profiles to determine where smelly objects are located.
  5. The breed of dog with the best sense of smell is the Bloodhound.

Don't miss the PAW-ty! Fido Fest is on Saturday, March 23 at Jamestown Beach Event Park. It is a family festival featuring dog-friendly activities, adorable doggie photo ops, entertaining demos, games, contests, food, and vendors. Parking is $5 per car. HHS will be there with an information table and adoptable dogs.

February Enrichment Idea

Enrichment is something we provide for the animals to encourage them to interact with things in their environment and allow them to use their natural behaviors. Some forms of enrichment that you might provide your pets at home are a toy mouse for cats or a chew toy for dogs.

When cats come into the shelter, we want them to think, play and exercise. This is a project that you can make for your cats at home. All you need is a toilet paper roll, scissors and their favorite treats. Start by folding the ends of the toilet paper roll so there isn’t a gap. Cut a hole in the middle of the roll big enough that the treats will fit through. Drop in a few nibbles and fold the other end. Our adoptable cat Winston loves to bat the roll around to get to the yummy snacks.
