Quality Corner

Summer is coming to an end, and now it’s time to welcome Fall!  There are so many activities to do with children to get them excited about the season change. We can do fun things to strengthen all learning domains.  It’s easy to come up with art ideas, but there are so many ideas for math, science, literacy, music and movement, and fine motor and gross motor development.

As you enjoy your fall activities, share your ideas and pictures with your Family Child Care Specialist!

Here are some great websites where you can find some really fun activities to do:

When working with young children, we often find ourselves in the habit of “Let me do it for you”. But what happens when that child grows up and they only know to let someone else do it for them? This concept applies not only to our self-help skills, but also to our logical reasoning and problem solving skills. If we are always jumping in with the answer, we aren’t showing the thought processes we followed to get to that answer. For many young children, having that thought process modeled to them can be as powerful as teaching them to button a jacket or tie their shoe. Check out this article on Guiding Children by Using Questions by Jack Wright from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Regulation Reminder

Whether you are inside the classroom or outside on the playground, we need to ensure we are maintaining proper active supervision. Some great strategies for maintaining active supervision include: Position the Staff, Scan and Count, Listen, Set the Environment, Anticipate Children’s Behaviors, and Engage and Redirect.

So how do we use these strategies? Position the Staff focuses on placing yourself in a position where you can see and/or hear all children in your program at all times. That goes hand in hand with Setting the Environment.

Setting the Environment is all about ensuring the classroom, or the outside classroom, is set up in a way that limits behaviors and to where you are able to see across the space without any furniture blocking your line of sight.

Why is line of sight so important? Another strategy we can use is to Scan and Count! When you are scanning and counting, you are more likely to ensure all children are still within the boundaries you set for your program and that they have not wandered off. This can be a game changer during transitions as well! But with scanning and counting, you always want to ensure you lay eyes on all children, rather than going off gut instincts that tell you they are where they were last you checked. There’s a high probability they’ve already wandered off from their location and your count will be off.

Listening seems like an easy to grasp strategy, as we are always listening for children, however even moments of silence can be cause for concern and require need for checking in on the children.

And if we hear a conflict brewing, or telltale signs of challenging behaviors, we always want to jump in to Engage and Redirect. When possible, we want to encourage children to learn to solve conflicts, so some children may need additional guidance in navigating these new and frustrating scenarios.

As you know your own children, we greatly encourage you to rely on Anticipating their Behaviors. Since you know how they are likely to react to certain situations, you can often jump in and redirect before a conflict even arises.

The Family Child Care Network will be offering a 4-part training series focusing on strengthening business practices. The purpose of this training is to strengthen childcare providers’ foundational knowledge of fiscal terms, concepts, and practices. It encourages providers to realize the importance of financial planning to the sustainability of their business. It provides tips and best practices to help break down fiscal processes into manageable steps.

This training is intended to be one part of the learning process to build providers’ understanding of good business practices.

Whenever possible, it is recommended that this training be supplemented with technical assistance and ongoing peer-to-peer sharing opportunities such as communities of practice. During this training, you will be introduced to financial reports that can help you better manage your center’s finances. We will also be helping you understand the concept of internal controls and how they can strengthen your program's fiscal health.
