Greetings!

Welcome to the Spring 2024 edition of The Epitaph, Lowell Cemetery’s seasonal newsletter.

Throughout a wet, windy winter, when they were not providing professional and compassionate burial and inurnment services, our year-round Grounds staff members have been busy cleaning up downed trees, limbs, and branches.

Everyone on the Lowell Cemetery team is looking forward to the return of warmer spring weather and gentler breezes. In the meantime, the Grounds staff continue doing an excellent job cleaning up, and Lowell Cemetery looks beautiful because of their efforts.

We are also looking forward to our seasonal employees’ return in mid-April, four months after their annual winter departure. Several of these employees have been with us for more than 20 years. They are part of the Lowell Cemetery family and integral to maintaining our historic grounds' year-round elegance and charm.

I hope to see you at one of the several events planned in April and May, which will provide interesting facts about several former Lowell residents buried or inurned at the Cemetery. See what Lowell Cemetery has planned in the following pages.

The Sad, Curious Death of Mary Ann Birmingham

"She was just a month shy of her twenty-seventh birthday on that beautiful, clear, crisp Fall day, October 21, 1861, when the young and beautiful Mary Ann Birmingham died in a” paroxysm of spasms” at her father’s house where she lived with Alexander C. Peters, her physician husband and eighteen-month-old son, Samuel. The young family had only moved to Lowell from New York City in the past year or so . . ."

Become a Volunteer

We are pleased to announce our new Volunteer Program. There are many

opportunities to participate. For example, the Cemetery staff will need help in the Memorial Day timeframe to place flags on veterans’ graves; or there may be a need to clean certain headstones that require a little “TLC.” Another “Portrait & Mausoleum” tour is planned for September and will need “interpreters.” There are no requirements or time commitments. The Cemetery will notify you of an opportunity based on your interest, and you can decide whether or not you’ve got the time to participate. Click here to read more.

Spring Walking Tours

Spring Tour Weekend is Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21 at 10 a.m.

Tours will begin at the Lawrence St. Gate.

monuments, and lives of those buried here. Join us to enjoy an example of a very sad lion, an Egyptian Receiving Tomb, and the splendor of a Victorian armchair.

Veterans' Tour

Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m.

Tour starts at Knapp Ave. entrance.

To honor those who served in the armed forces of the United States, the Lowell Cemetery will host a guided tour of selected veterans' graves and monuments. Led by Richard Howe, Jr.
