Fond farewells to Bishop Jon and Mary Bruno
Above: Candlelit prayers and singing close a Sunday-evening gathering hosted Oct. 1 at Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel, by Stillpoint, a diocesan institution dedicated to spiritual direction and formation, for retiring Bishop Diocesan J. Jon Bruno and Mary Bruno. Some 100 people gathered for refreshments with presentations led by the Rev. Elizabeth Rechter, Stillpoint executive director; Joe Web, board member (pictured below with the Brunos); and Ravi Verma, program officer. With text drawn from Matthew 25, an original litany guided attendees in thanksgivings for the Bruno and their wide spectrum of ministries - ranging from help for the hungry and homeless to clergy wellness and Middle East ministries - during the bishop's 17-year episcopate. The Brunos received a framed memento capturing attendees' multicolored fingerprints crafted in the shape of a tree.
A full report of the farewell gatherings is planned for the next Episcopal News magazine. Regional Saturday farewell gatherings for the Brunos, to which all are welcome, continue: see listings

Laguna Hills church honors Bruno
with Order of St. George
At the first of four receptions honoring Bishop Jon and Mary Bruno, held at St. George's Church, Laguna Hills, a dragon and St. George (portrayed by parishioners Kathie Killen and Mike Ziegler) surround the retiring bishop, who later was inducted into the Order of St. George by Joyce Swaving, bishop's warden - a parish honor also awarded in 2005 to Mary Bruno. About 100 people in attendance enjoyed Bishop Coadjutor John Taylor's preface to the induction, in which he related St. George's deeds to Jon Bruno's Hands in Healing ministries and his zeal to prevent domestic abuse and other forms of violence.

Blessing of icons marks
St. Francis Day
Original icons of St. Francis by Josie Contreras, congregant at Holy Spirit Fellowship in Atwater Village, were blessed by Bishop Coadjutor John Taylor during Eucharist at the Cathedral Center Oct. 4, feast day of the popular patron of animals and creation. Displayed during a morning Eucharist for leaders of the diocesan schools, the four icons depict St. Francis in different contexts, said Contreras, a former ink-and-paint artist at Hanna Barbera Productions. Her rendering of "St. Francis Weeping Over Creation," pictured at left, features detail illustrating humanity's failure to protect the environment. Also a longtime ministry volunteer at Sylmar Juvenile Hall, Contreras commented on a smaller 2002 icon of St. Francis, her first, noting that it was a gift to a friend named Frank, who deepened his faith and later changed his name to Francis. With Contreras' agreement, Cathedral Center Press will print greeting cards, to be available within the coming year, featuring the four images.
