Bishop Naudal Gomes sees opportunity and challenge as convener of Hispanic clergy group

By Janet Kawamoto

[The Episcopal News – July 31, 2024] Hispanic ministry in the Diocese of Los Angeles is “at a time of new beginnings,” says the Rt. Rev. Naudal Alves Gomes, former archbishop and primate of Brazil, who recently was named by Bishop John Harvey Taylor as bishop missioner for ministry in Spanish.

Gomes now convenes the working group of Latino and Latina clergy from congregations that carry out ministry in the Spanish language. As convener he succeeds the Rev. Antonio Gallardo, who became rector of St. Luke’s Church, Long Beach, last year.

“I would like to express my gratitude to Bishop John, who has called me into this new ministry,” Gomes told The Episcopal News in remarks written in Spanish and translated by the Rev. Norma Guerra. “His leadership and concern for the life and mission of the church encourages us all.” Gomes also thanked Gallardo for “gathering and encouraging us, so that in dialogue and sharing we could follow our ministerial call in the communities that we have been called to serve.”

Gomes plans to extend the clergy cohort’s relationships with other church leaders on the diocesan and wider church levels. “The first steps to take in order to accomplish the task that I have been given is to start a dialogue with our colleagues, partners in mission, so that together we may decide the best roads to follow in order to strengthen and develop our ministries.”

Palisades lay professional Missy Morain named diocesan missioner for Christian formation, children, youth ministries

By EN Staff

[The Episcopal News – July 31, 2024] Missy Morain – director of program ministry at St. Matthew’s, Pacific Palisades, and a parish staff member there for 15 years – has been named diocesan missioner for Christian formation, children, and youth ministries, Bishop John Harvey Taylor announced today.

“Energy and expertise in forming Christian disciples among children and youth are key gifts that Missy brings to the common life of our congregations and diocese,” Taylor said of Morain. “Her appointment has been made possible with funding from a grant dedicated to this purpose, and we give thanks for this opportunity to strengthen multiple levels of ministry.”

“I’m excited to begin working with Missy,” said the Rev. Canon Melissa McCarthy, diocesan canon to the ordinary and chief of staff. “Her proven skills include building a network among congregations seeking to share resources in ministries with children, youth, and families. Her ministry will bring new connectivity among local youth groups within wider diocesan life and support Christian educators at all levels. Her experience as an elected member of Diocesan Council adds to her understanding of ministry contexts in our region.”

“I am deeply honored to join the staff of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and am excited to collaborate with our congregations and missions,” Morain told The News. “I am looking forward to a future filled with laughter, formation, and a whole lot of holy mischief!”

EMM encourages congregations to become community partners in refugee resettlement

By David Paulsen

[Episcopal News Service – July 30, 2024] Episcopalians across the United States can now serve The Episcopal Church’s biblical mission of welcoming the stranger by forming teams to help resettle refugees in their communities – a call that has grown increasingly urgent, given the uncertain outcome of the Nov. 5 presidential election.

Episcopal Migration Ministries, or EMM, is one of 10 agencies with contracts to facilitate refugee resettlement on behalf of the U.S. State Department, and each year, it welcomes thousands of refugees through its 13 affiliates nationwide. For the past two years, it also has been authorized to assist arriving individuals and families through congregations and other groups that volunteer to serve as remote placement community partners.

Episcopal Church marks 50th anniversary of the Philadelphia 11 ordinations

By Melodie Woerman

[Episcopal News Service – July 29, 2024] Churches on July 28 marked the 50th anniversary of the ordination of the first women priests in The Episcopal Church with special sermons, screenings of the Philadelphia Eleven documentary and even by encouraging churches to have a woman celebrating at every altar.

The ordination service took place on July 29, 1974 – the feast day of Mary and Martha of Bethany – at Philadelphia’s Church of the Advocate. In 1974, no canon specifically forbade women from becoming priests in The Episcopal Church, but to that point diocesan standing committees and bishops had almost uniformly rejected women’s requests for ordination to the priesthood. Only one of the Philadelphia Eleven had received the backing of her standing committee, and their bishops refused to ordain them, so the ordinations were considered “irregular.”

Four more women were ordained at St. Stephen and the Incarnation in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 7, 1975. They became known as the Washington Four.
