Bishop Taylor announces election of a bishop coadjutor at 2025 convention
[The Episcopal News - August 14, 2024] The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Los Angeles, mindful that the seventh bishop of Los Angeles, the Rt. Rev. John Harvey Taylor, will reach the church’s mandatory retirement age in 2026, has called for the election of a bishop coadjutor at the 2025 meeting of Diocesan Convention.
On August 13, Taylor issued a letter in English and Spanish announcing the coming election and outlining the search process, which began in June when the Standing Committee met with the Rt. Rev. Todd Ousley, bishop for pastoral development in Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s office. In early August the committee appointed Judy Stark of the Diocese of Southwest Florida as search consultant.
"In the days ahead, the Standing Committee will announce the names of the search committee," Taylor wrote. "From that point forward, the search committee will take responsibility for reporting on its progress."
The search committee's first steps will be preparation of a diocesan profile, which will be published early in 2025 along with a call for nominations. The committee will review applications, conduct interviews, and announce a slate of candidates. "Members of the diocese will have a chance to meet the candidates at a series of town meetings," Taylor notes in his letter. The election will take place at the 2025 meeting of Diocesan Convention.

Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan: “Everyone is entitled to his own truth, but not his own facts.”
With opening remarks from Bishop Diocesan John Harvey Taylor, the first panel will feature insights presented by journalists and a cyber liaison officer, while the second webinar’s panelists will be a clinical psychologist, a theologian, and a retired federal district court judge. LA priest visits Japan's Diocese of Hokkaidō for 150th anniversary
The Rev. Joshua H. Lee recently represented the Diocese of Los Angeles in a festive celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Diocese of Hokkaidō, part of the Nippon Sei Ko Kai, the Anglican Church in Japan. The celebration, which drew some 450 attendees, took place at Christ Church Cathedral in the capitol city of Sapporo.
Lee returned bringing greetings to the Diocese of Los Angeles from the Rt. Rev. Maria Grace Sasamori Tatsuru of Hokkaidō, first female bishop in Asia. Her diocese includes seven clergy members, 21 churches, five kindergartens, and four nursery schools.
Hokkaidō is the second-largest island of Japan, located to the north of the main island. The Anglican diocese began in 1874 with the first English missionaries in the area.
Lee, a native of Korea, served in the Hokkaidō diocese as a missionary before coming to the United States. He now is studying for a qualification in oriental medicine for mission.

The Grand Canyon, petroglyphs and the empty tomb
August 13, 2024
When my elder daughter, Valerie, was eleven, she and I hiked the Bright Angel Trail from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the Phantom Ranch at the bottom, where they used to serve your choice of steak or beef stew and offer bunks for the night. During our ascent the next day, Valerie didn’t complain once.

New York youth embark on Jonathan Daniels pilgrimage, visit historic Civil Rights’ sites
By Shireen Korkzan
[Episcopal News Service – Hayneville, Alabama – August 14, 2024] Angel Williams, a 15-year-old from New York City, thought she already knew a lot about the Civil Rights Movement from her high school U.S. history class. But when Williams joined 13 other teenagers from the Diocese of New York for its 10th annual Blest Jonathan Daniels Youth Civil Rights pilgrimage, she realized she still has much to learn.
“Visiting the Civil Rights’ places that we did was very powerful,” Williams told Episcopal News Service. “For instance, we learned in books that lynching happened back then, but then the museums we went to showed us actual photos of Black men getting lynched, and it was very, very, very disturbing for me.”

“I find the enthusiasm shown by so many to serve our church truly inspiring,” Ayala Harris said last week in a House of Deputies newsletter. “To me, it reflects not only the vibrant spirit and diverse talents within our Episcopal community, but also the deep desire of our members to be part of our governance and actively participate in the mission of the church.”

Meet Cathy, the new AI chatbot and Episcopal Church expert
By Kathryn Post
[Religion News Service – August 6, 2024] First, there was Xian’er, the cartoon-like, mantra-chanting robot Buddhist monk that China introduced in 2015. Then there was the German “BlessU-2” robot that dispensed blessings using ATM parts, and Pepper, the Japanese robot priest that delivered funeral rites.
Now a new generation of religious AI is emerging with the advent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT — some with mixed success. The latest AI chatbot geared for spiritual seekers is AskCathy, co-launched in June by a research institute and ministry organization and aiming to roll out soon on Episcopal church websites. Cathy draws on the latest version of ChatGPT and is equipped to prioritize Episcopalian resources.
Pictured above is the Rev. Lorenzo Lebrija, priest of the Diocese of Los Angeles and executive director of TryTank Research Institute at Virginia Theological Seminary, which collaborated with others on the chatbot project.
