Letter from the President

Dear fellow Edgewood residents and friends,

Like many of you, my husband and I have struggled through the past year due to the lingering effects of last year's devastating flood...with many still fighting to get their homes back.

This struggle has gotten even more challenging with the repeated flooding that persists in our neighborhood. On behalf of the Edgewood Civic Association board, please be assured that we are working relentlessly to improve our situation and raise awareness of the situations that impact us all!

Over the coming weeks and months of the hurricane season, that promises to challenge the inefficient drainage systems we live with, know that we are here for you.

I encourage you to reach out to me with specific challenges as they're happening so we can direct city services to the most needy areas as quickly as possible to help minimize further damage.

I wish you and your families a happy and safe 4th of July holiday filled with laughter and fun!

Respectfully,

Kitty McGowan, President

Keep Trash Out of South Florida - Recycle Better

Fort Lauderdale is recycling, but we need to cut down our contamination - that means no trash in your recycle bin.

Recycling rules can change according to who will buy the recycled material, so we succeed when we follow current guidelines. Our single-stream system allows proper glass, plastic, aluminum, steel, and paper items in your curbside bin.

Once tossed in the recycle bin, each recycled item is looking to be with similar items to be grouped and sold for its next life.

Recycling is simple but confusing.

TIPS TO SLOW THE FILLING OF OUR LANDFILLS:

  • That milk jug needs to be with the other similar plastics. Each item bounces down a huge conveyor belt to be separated. There are people hand sorting and every item has to be free to get sorted. Do not tie up your recycles into bags, this tangles the machinery.

  • Although your item is made of plastic, it might be odd, like styrofoam or a hose that cannot be matched with the same type to be turned into a new product. Just because it's plastic doesn't mean it can be recycled.

  • Most food-grade glass and drinking bottles are recycled.

  • Plastics? Flip it over, look for a number in arrows, and put most #1 and #2 in the recycle bin.

  • Don't want rats and rot? Then only recycle clean paper. If you can tear it and it's clean, then recycle it - no pizza boxes and no fast food containers.

  • Food containers of steel and aluminum are recycled.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Let's clean up our recycled items for success.
