Keep Trash Out of South Florida - Recycle Better
Fort Lauderdale is recycling, but we need to cut down our contamination - that means no trash in your recycle bin.
Recycling rules can change according to who will buy the recycled material, so we succeed when we follow current guidelines. Our single-stream system allows proper glass, plastic, aluminum, steel, and paper items in your curbside bin.
Once tossed in the recycle bin, each recycled item is looking to be with similar items to be grouped and sold for its next life.
Recycling is simple but confusing.
TIPS TO SLOW THE FILLING OF OUR LANDFILLS:
- That milk jug needs to be with the other similar plastics. Each item bounces down a huge conveyor belt to be separated. There are people hand sorting and every item has to be free to get sorted. Do not tie up your recycles into bags, this tangles the machinery.
- Although your item is made of plastic, it might be odd, like styrofoam or a hose that cannot be matched with the same type to be turned into a new product. Just because it's plastic doesn't mean it can be recycled.
- Most food-grade glass and drinking bottles are recycled.
- Plastics? Flip it over, look for a number in arrows, and put most #1 and #2 in the recycle bin.
- Don't want rats and rot? Then only recycle clean paper. If you can tear it and it's clean, then recycle it - no pizza boxes and no fast food containers.
- Food containers of steel and aluminum are recycled.
When in doubt, throw it out.
Let's clean up our recycled items for success.
