Some Cool News during the Hot Summer
Although summer can be a bit challenging for The Next Stop, we continue to enjoy meaningful and fun times together! It's the time of year that we share gym space, have some extra noise and dodge flying basketballs and volleyballs. The busy summer camps and tournaments going on inside Suwanee Sports Academy keep us flexible and on our toes!
Summer Conversations
Our music therapist Ms. Miquel leads a different lesson each month that supports a variety of skills. Recently our members practiced conversational skills in a unique way. They had "musical conversations" .

While making eye contact with a partner, one would play a simple instrument and when finished, the other would play theirs. The key was to listen, wait and then respond. Some played for long periods of time, some short--it often matched their individual personalities!
Following this part of the activity, members worked on responding appropriately to a comment made by their partner about a certain subject.
Lastly, the big test was remembering what each other 's responses were. Many volunteered to demonstrate their memory skills to the group as Ms. Miquel interviewed them.
Summer Bowling

For the last several summers, the Publix at McGinnis Crossing in Suwanee has provided 4 volunteers for each of our summer bowling Fridays. These volunteers come ready to bowl alongside our members and support them with lots of cheers and high fives.

This community partner relationship provides our members the opportunity to meet and interact with new people. The extra hands help The Next Stop oversee this bowling activity. And, it gives our Publix volunteers the opportunity to serve and get to know more about the adult special needs population. Everybody wins!
Summer Zumba
Our Zumba teacher Ms. Lisa visits The Next Stop 3 times a month. When the gym space is limited during the summer, we invite the MySport camp at Suwanee Sports Academy to join us; after all, they are sharing their gym with us! Watch this short video to feel the energy in the room! Zumba in July
Celebrating Summer Special Olympic Athletes
Pictured here are only some of the members of The Next Stop who participated in the Summer Games at Emory in May. These Special Olympic athletes represent swimming, volleyball, and tennis. Special Olympic state games are held in the fall, winter and summer, with summer offering the most sports, so the most participating athletes!
