Integration Summit Is a Collaborative Success

On June 26, approximately 150 Integration Executive and Advisory Committee members, task force members, and department chairs from New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) came together for an Integration Summit at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine in Newark.

The goals of the summit were to celebrate the progress that has been made; to build community and engagement between schools and leadership; to officially launch the LCME self-study for accreditation; and to plan the next steps in creating the new entity.

The summit, jointly hosted by RWJMS Dean Amy P. Murtha, MD, and NJMS Dean Robert L. Johnson, MD, FAAP, had an ambitious agenda. “We're thrilled that you have committed to locking arms with us as we exchange fresh insights that will guide our integration plans,” said Dean Johnson in his opening remarks.

“This is an important moment in our history that we will all look back and reflect on,” added Dean Murtha. “We are grateful to each and every one of you for taking the time to do the work that will allow us to create Rutgers School of Medicine. What you’ve accomplished is remarkable, and there is much more to be done.”

Special moments from the Integration Summit are captured in this slideshow and this video, both highlighting the atmosphere of community and collaboration.

RWJMS Wins 2024 Telehealth Equity Catalyst Award

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has announced the winners of the 2024 Telehealth Equity Catalyst (TEC) Awards. Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is among the five institutions recognized for efforts to reduce barriers to health care access through telehealth for the YourHealthKiosk program.

Sabiha Hussain, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and program director for the pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship, founded the program, which centers around promoting access to healthcare services via a digital platform that can be used in person or via text. As stated on the AAMC website, "the program uses a multidisciplinary approach, including bilingual navigators and community health workers, technology, community partnerships and collaboration and promoting health literacy. In the past year, YourHealthKiosk has worked in many underserved areas in Central New Jersey (i.e., New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, and Franklin)."

Other 2024 TEC Award recipients include Johns Hopkins Health Systems, Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, and the University of California Davis Health.

Congratulations, Dr. Hussain, and everyone who made this deserving recognition possible.

Two Medical School Students Awarded 2024 Gold Student Summer Fellowships

Medical students Annesha Datta and Neha Maddali have been awarded The Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Gold Student Summer Fellowship, which supports medical students in conducting research or service projects related to community health and developing compassionate, patient-centered care skills.

“Gold Student Summer Fellowships let students explore healthcare beyond hospitals,” said Elizabeth Cleek, PsyD, COO and senior vice president of the Gold Foundation. “We are funding seven student-designed projects this year that promote human-centered care and include patient and community voices.”

The goal of Annesha and Neha's EmpowHER Bracelet Workshops project is to improve health literacy and access to reproductive healthcare and women’s health services in New Jersey. Developed with the Cyclo 360 Family Planning Center, the workshops combine bracelet-making with women’s health education in a supportive, non-stigmatized environment.

“We were at a Planned Parenthood conference when the email came in, and it felt perfect,” said Annesha. Neha added, “Seeing the email was a proud moment for us, realizing we could turn our passions into a meaningful project.”

The Gold Foundation’s programs, including the White Coat Ceremony and Gold Humanism Honor Society, emphasize humanism in healthcare, reaching hundreds of thousands of clinicians, students, and leaders.

Congratulations, Annesha and Neha!

$6.3 Million Endowed Directorship at Rutgers Cancer Institute Honors Visionary Leader

The Rutgers Board of Governors has approved the establishment of the William Hait Endowed Directorship at Rutgers Cancer Institute, funded by $6.3 million in donations. Named after William N. Hait, MD, PhD, former professor of medicine and pharmacology and associate dean for oncology, and founding director, the director of the Cancer Institute will now be known as the William Hait Director.

Dr. Hait, currently executive vice president and chief external innovation officer at Johnson & Johnson, led Rutgers Cancer Institute to achieve its National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation in 1997 and Comprehensive Cancer Center status in 2002. Dr. Hait will retire from Johnson & Johnson in September.

“This endowed directorship is a fitting tribute to Bill’s remarkable leadership and innovation in oncology,” said Steven K. Libutti, MD, current director of Rutgers Cancer Institute and senior vice president of oncology services at RWJBarnabas Health.

Hait expressed his gratitude, saying, “It was an honor to work with so many dedicated individuals to create a cancer center of extraordinary quality for New Jersey.”

Rutgers Cancer Institute will celebrate Hait's contributions with a special event in the fall.
