Medical School Faculty, RWJUH Named Inaugural Research 'All-Stars'

Eight members of the medical school's surgical specialists were selected by Avant-garde Health among the Top 5% in its inaugural 2024 Research All-Stars list, released this month, for the quality and quantity of leading-edge surgery research they authored and published in 2021 and 2022.


Medical school faculty who were recognized included:


  • Toni Beninato, MD, associate professor of surgery (Top 3% General Surgery Research)
  • Craig Bollig, MD, assistant professor of otolaryngology -- head and neck surgery (Top 3% ENT Surgery Research)
  • Saum Ghodoussipour, MD, assistant professor of surgery (Top 5% Urology Surgery Research)
  • Joseph S. Hanna, MD, PhD, associate dean of quality at the medical school and associate chief quality officer at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (Top 5% General Surgery Research)
  • Leonard Y. Lee, MD, James W. Mackenzie, M.D. Professor and chair of the Department of Surgery (Top 5% General Surgery Research)
  • Dylan Nieman, MD, assistant professor of surgery (Top 5% General Surgery Research)
  • Vinod Rustgi, MD, distinguished professor of Surgery (Top 3% GI Surgery Research)
  • Amanda Teichman, MD, assistant professor of surgery (Top 5% General Surgery Research)


In addition, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital was recognized among the Top 5% Hospital Research All-Stars.

Stahl Memorial Lecture Welomes Renowned Bioethicist Dr. Norman Fost

This week, the medical school hosted its annual Mates David and Hinna Stahl Memorial Lecture in Bioethics, welcoming Norman Fost, MD, MPH, for a discussion on the dysregulation of research.


Dr. Fost is professor emeritus in the Division of Child Protection at the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health, who served as vice chair of the Departments of Pediatrics and Medical History and Bioethics for 10 years, founder and director of the UW Child Protection Program for 33 years, and founder and director of the Program in Bioethics. A former chair of the Food and Drug Administration Pediatric Ethics Committee and the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Bioethics, Dr. Fost also served as a member of President Bill Clinton's Health Care Task Force and received a lifetime achievement award from the U.S. Office of Human Research Protection.

Hospital Seeks Additional 'Green Committee' Members

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is seeking hospital and medical school team members who are interested in sustainability and new initiatives to enhance the hospital's eco-friendly practices to join the Green Committee.

Martin J. Blaser, MD, Henry Rutgers Chair of the Human Microbiome, professor of medicine and pathology & laboratory medicine at the medical school, and director of Rutgers Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine, has been selected to receive an Outstanding Scientist Award in this year's EJI Excellence in Medicine Awards.


Dr. Blaser is one of six New Jerseyans being honored during this year's ceremony, including the following Rutgers colleagues:

  • Marc Klapholz, MD, MBA, chair, Department of Medicine, New Jersey Medical School (EJI Physician's Award)
  • Matthew Neiditch, PhD, professor, Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Genetics, New Jersey Medical School (Outstanding Scientist Award)


In addition, Andy Anderson, MD, MBA, executive vice president, chief medical and quality officer of RWJBarnabas Health, has been selected for this this year's Outstanding Healthcare Executive Award, and alumna Carmela Rocchetti, MD, will receive the 2024 Outstanding Medical Educator Award. The Peter W. Rodino Jr., Citizen's Award is being given to three-time Super Bowl Champion and former New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers player Bart Oats, who serves as executive director of CIT International.


The EJI Excellence in Medicine Awards will be presented during a May 1 ceremony at Park Chateau Estate and Gardens in East Brunswick.

The Office of Education and Academic Affairs is seeking nominations for this year's Professor Richard A. Harvey Excellence in Teaching Innovation Award.


Nominees must be full-time faculty in either a basic science or clinical department of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and nominations should be made by the division chief or department chair. A letter describing the nominee's educational contributions, special recognition, and innovation in medical education should be submitted to the Office of Education at rwjmsacademicaffairs@rwjms.rutgers.edu.


Nominees also will submit a CV and a one- to two-page personal statement to the same email address, describing their educational career trajectory, goals and aspirations; evidence of educational innovation and exceptional teaching; and specific descriptions of how the award will be used to further innovate in medical education.


The award recipient will be selected by a committee from the Institute for Excellence in Education based on the following criteria:

  • A track record of innovation and service in medical education at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
  • Evidence of impact of nominee's educational scholarship at local, regional and national levels
  • Feasibility of the proposed use of the award and its potential impact to the educational community


Nominations are due June 7.

The Schwartz Rounds program is a multidisciplinary forum where clinical caregivers can discuss social and emotional issues in caring for patients.

More than 20 medical school departments and programs will be on hand at this year's Rutgers Day, April 27, joining other Rutgers Health units and our clinical partners, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, as part of the Rutgers Health "Health Village" on Busch Campus in Piscataway.


Participating programs include the Division of Addiction Psychiatry, the medical school's Anatomical Association, the Boggs Center on Disability and Human Development, the Center for Psychiatric Health and Genomics, the Cleft and Craniofacial Center, the Department of Communications and Public Affairs, the Homeless & Indigent Population Health Outreach Project (HIPHOP), the Department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology, the Department of Neurosurgery, the Department of Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery, the Office of Admissions, the Division of Pain Medicine, Pediatric Clinical Research Center, the Division of Perinatal Genetics, the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Robert Wood Johnson AIDS Program, Rutgers Project ECHO, the Simulation Laboratories, the Division of Urology and the Division of Vascular Surgery, along with the Rutgers Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine.
