Welcome to "DMIA Matters"

The digital message board for DMIA members

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The US diamond trade is about to go on its summer holidays, and this is a good time to wish all our members and their staff a well-deserved vacation!

Did you know that our association is more than 90 years old?

In 2006, on the occasion of the DMIA's 75th anniversary, US Senator Chuck Schumer wrote this in a letter: "… the DMIA represents the leading diamond manufacturers, importers and dealers in the United States. The DMIA works hard to promote the highest standards of ethics, integrity and professionalism in the American marketplace."

That statement is still accurate. It is up to us to continue and live up to its truth. Mayor Michael Bloomberg wrote at the time that 47th Street, or Diamond & Jewelry Way "bestowed international prestige on our city's business community, and boosted our economy in numerous ways."

We're taking our holidays at a time of global economic uncertainty and political turmoil that affect our trade, too. What will the implications for the coming winter holiday sales season be? Will institutions such as the Kimberley Process that regulate the rough trade survive? How will a divided diamond industry ensure it can continue to regulate and present itself and its products ethically and responsibly? Never a dull moment!

We'll come back to all of this after the summer. In the meantime please enjoy whatever time you take off and I hope that any summer travel is not as frustrating for you as what is being predicted.

Stuart Samuels,

President

The DMIA Matters Circular No. 2, June 2022

This is your logo, too!

DMIA's new visual identity will be made available to all DMIA members toward the end of the summer, upon the launch of the new DMIA website and DMIA's social media channels.

Question: Which social and digital business channels do you use to build your brand identity network? Do you have a profile on Linkedin? Have you tried other social media channels?

From DMIA's current website

DMIA’s history has been celebrated, albeit not well recorded.

On the current website, we offer digital copies of the booklets that were produced on occassion of DMIA’s 50th and 75th anniversaries. Take a look at them some time over the summer.

Do you possess any historical documents or visuals that would be of interest to the DMIA? Please take some time during your summer break to find them.

These can be photos, documents, certificates of achievement, congratulatory letters from dignitaries, and even videos or movies.

Let us know what you find! We’d love to take a look and possibly include them in DMIA’s online archives for all to enjoy! Drop us a line here?

P.S.: Can anyone name the two famous past DMIA presidents pictured above?

Volunteers, anyone?

The DMIA now shares its office with its sister associations, the Indian Diamond & Color Stone Association and the Natural Colored Diamond Association.

Ashrafi Chalisa manages the joint office at 580 Av. #625.

The DMIA’s archives - documents, photos, magazines - are also in the joint office.

To make the DMIA archives accessible, searchable, and shareable, they must be re-organized and properly filed.

Are there any volunteers among you who may want to help with this?

Or do you know anyone who might be interested in giving Ash a hand with this?

Plesase let us know at communications@dmia.diamonds or office@dmia.diamonds.

In case you missed it: Martin Rapaport's annual breakfast speech

On June 12th, Martin Rapaport held his annual "State of the Industry" presentation at the JCK Las Vegas show. In case you overslept, or did not make it to Vegas this year, you can now watch this two-hour long video in a lounge chair on the beach with a cool drink!
