Tillman Ridge Temporary Closure
From June 1st until June 30th
The Tillman Ridge Transfer Station, located at 3005 Allen Nease Rd., Elkton, is scheduled to be closed for repairs of the tipping floor beginning June 1. Normal operations at the transfer station are expected to resume on July 1. Only residential household hazardous waste will be accepted from residents during the temporary closure, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Stratton Road Transfer Station, located at 250 North Stratton Rd., St. Augustine, will remain open to serve all residential and commercial customers. Please be patient as delays may be experienced during peak hours at the transfer station. The Stratton Road Transfer Station is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

New Contract begins August 1
FCC Environmental Services
In December 2023, FCC Environmental Services Florida, LLC was identified as the top-ranked firm, and a contract for residential solid waste collection including household garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection services was approved.
The new contract begins August 1, 2024. There will be no increase in customer fees for the first year of service. All current service levels will remain in place which include weekly curbside collection of household garbage, yard waste, recycling, and bulk waste as well as scheduled services like appliance pick-up requested by customers.

Public Works Week
May 19-25, 2024
At the May 21 BOCC Meeting, Commissioner Roy Alaimo, District 3, issued a proclamation recognizing May 19-25, 2024 as Public Works Week.
Public Works professionals are essential for maintaining the infrastructure, facilities, and services that keep our community sustainable, resilient, and thriving. This year’s theme, “Advancing Quality of Life for All,” highlights their crucial contributions to our health, safety, and well-being.
Thank you to all the engineers, managers, supervisors, and employees who work tirelessly to build, improve, and protect our essential infrastructure!

Last month, Matthew Denny joined Wayne Larson, Director of Public Affairs, and radio host, Kevin Geddings, live on WSOS 103.9. They discussed recycling, sustainability, and promoted upcoming events.

Flag Day
June 14
June 14 is Flag Day! This day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.
To celebrate Flag Day, the American Flag Rescue Program has reusable flags available to the community. Give us a call at 904.827.6980 to find out more. If you are getting rid of an old flag, please use one of the American Flag Drop Boxes located throughout the County to make sure it is properly retired with honor and respect.

SJC 101 Recap
Citizens Academy Pilot Program
The first SJC 101: Citizens Academy Pilot Program was held at Public Works last month and was a resounding success! It was a wonderful opportunity for residents to get a peek behind the curtain and learn all about how their government works.
The goals of SJC 101 are to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of County departments and their operations, to build social engagement by creating advocates for County’s programs and services, and to develop new leadership to serve on County advisory boards or other roles within the community.
Public Works was the first of four pilot programs that will be held at different departments over the next few weeks. A comprehensive SJC 101 will be offered in 2025. Click the button below to learn more:

Turtletown USA Recap
County-Wide Beach Cleanup
Last month, St. Johns County Solid Waste partnered with other departments and local organizations to hold a county-wide beach cleanup to remove litter and debris for sea turtle nesting season.
This event was under the umbrella of the new GET HOOKED Anti-Litter Initiative St. Johns County rolled out in January 2024.
It spanned 8 locations, from Mickler's Landing all the way to Ft. Matanzas. There were 300 volunteers that came out to participate, cleaning up over 400 pounds of litter from our beaches!
We asked them to give us their best "Argggh!"

Arbor Day Recap
City of St. Augustine Beach
In April, the Solid Waste Division participated in the City of St. Augustine Beach's Arbor Day Event at City Hall.
There were a number of great vendors and educators and attendees were all given a free tree to take home and plant.

Pacetti Bay Middle School Recap
Learning about the 3 Arrrghs!
Last month, Capt. Reducio paid a visit to Pacetti Bay Middle School. They had a great time learning about the 3 Arrrghs! (Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle). They also learned how recycling works, why it's important, and how to recycle to right things.

In Memory of Weston J. Gies
SJC Adopt-A-Road Sponsor
In late April, the Gies family and friends conducted a road-side cleanup on Longleaf Pine Pkwy. They had 17 volunteers participate, filling 25 bags that weighed over 520lbs!
Thank you to the Gies family and all of our active Adopt-A-Road groups that help us keep SJC Litter Free.

Matanzas Riverkeeper is a partner of the GET HOOKED Anti-Litter Initiative and an active member of our Adopt-A-Road program. In April, they set out to clean up the historic Spengler Island, removing 1,280 pounds of trash!
