Our vision is to have a community where no kittens are born wild on the street, no cat  capable of living in a home is lacking one, and no feral cats are wanting for food, water,  and appropriate care and concern.

Kitten found near-death now has her forever home thanks to SAFCC!

Why is The Big Give such an important fundraiser for SAFCC? Besides being an all-volunteer organization, solely funded by donations and grants, SAFCC has created programs and services that reach far beyond our mission of TNR to help community cats in many ways. See how we helped Gabriela!

A concerned construction worker noticed this tiny kitten lying in the street, near death with flies around her. He couldn't stop to help as he was working, but thankfully, he posted her picture on Facebook in hopes that someone could help as it was killing him to watch her lie there and suffer in silence. Someone who saw the post called the the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition Helpline and a rescue was placed in motion. SAFCC volunteer and foster, Donna picked up the kitten on Gabriel Street and so named her Gabriela. Gabriela was in bad shape and Donna honestly doubted she would make it. Donna took Gabriela to a fellow SAFCC foster's home for SQ fluids and an assessment. They observed that Gabriela could not use her front legs and there were wounds on her neck. It was assumed she had been shaken so severely by a dog that damage was done to her cervical spine.

Without our volunteer-staffed Helpline, our Cat Crisis Fund, and our caring volunteers from our Community Cat Adoption Program, Gabriela and other cats like her would not have a chance! When you donate to SAFCC during the Big Give on March 26, 2020, you ensure we have the support to save lives like Gabriela!

Octavia is alive today thanks to SAFCC

A late helpline call came in from the feeders of a stray cat on Fort Sam Houston that had been bleeding for three days and had stopped eating. An urgent appeal to our volunteers went out for help and SAFCC volunteer Kathy B. answered the call. After catching the cat, named Octavia, Kathy could see that her chances were not looking good, but Kathy would not give up. Octavia was taken to an emergency clinic for overnight care.

Octavia was treated for dystocia, which results from a pregnant cat who is unable to expel a fetus. This was a dire diagnosis that would have proven fatal for Octavia without treatment. If Octavia survived the night, she would be transported to ACS the next day for further care and spay surgery.

SAFCC's Cat Crisis Fund paid to give Octavia the initial fluids and an antibiotic shot to stabilize her overnight. After surgery,  Kathy recovered Octavia and returned her to Fort Sam Houston, where her feeders were glad to have her back and very grateful that she was able to be saved.

Moral of the story: If you feed cats, fix them too--just like Octavia, their lives could depend on it! Even though Octavia's feeders cared for her, they had fed her for 10 months and never made the time to trap and fix her - and she almost lost her life because of this!
