  • The Economic Opportunity Act (EOA) created Community Action Agencies to coordinate local antipoverty efforts and funds programs Head Start, Job Corps, Community Health Centers, Upward Bound, the Work Experience Program, Neighborhood Youth Corps, Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA), and more.
  • The EOA was signed on August 20, 1964, seven months after President Johnson declared a "War on Poverty".
  • The EOA came not even two months after the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • The year launched an unprecedented period of executive and legislative action designed to achieve President Johnson’s vision to “elevate our national life and advance the quality of our American civilization” by ending poverty and racial injustice.

Celebrating 60 Years Strong in MA

May 2, JFK Presidential Library and Museum

We celebrated with Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, Senator Sal DiDomenico, Representative Marjorie Decker, Secretary, Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, Edward M. Augustus, and featured speaker Elzie "LZ" Granderson, OpEd Columnist, LA Times, ABC News Contributor, Life Out loud w/LZ Granderson podcast, as well as all 23 Community Agencies, clients and our partners in this ongoing work.

A few takeways:

  • We must draw on what we have learned about human needs and our experience in what works to continue the progress.
  • We must ensure that all voices are heard. We must all vote.
  • We must look at our similarities not our differences.
  • We must offer each other more grace and love.
