Summer 2024 Activity Guide | Now Live! | |
The Claremont Recreation & Human Services' Activity Guide for the Summer 2024 season is now available online and has a brand new look! Preivously called the "Recreation Brochure", the Activity Guide is where you will discover new and returning classes, events, and activities for all ages that will be available to the community from May through August. Flip to page 37 to see the Senior Program section! Registration for Senior Program activities is available online or in-person at the Joslyn Center.

Enjoy a fun-filled day on your own at the LA County Fair! Admission is $11, which includes transportation, for adults age 60+. Pre-registration is required.
Participants must complete a liability waiver in-person prior to this trip. Bus will depart from the Joslyn Center at 12:30 p.m. Notify staff upon enrollment if you have any mobility accommodation requests.

AARP Smart Driver: Two-Day Course |

This classroom-based defensive driving course is designed for persons 50 and older who are seeking to sharpen their driving skills. After eight hours of instruction, a DMV certificate will be issued entitling participants to a discount on their automobile insurance.
*Materials fee: $25 ($20 for AARP members) in cash or check due to the instructor on the first day of class.

Stay happy and healthy through dance! Learn official international line dances, and have fun improving your coordination, posture, motor memory, and dance skills in this class. Most of all, enjoy dancing with others! Participants are asked to wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Some line dance experience is required for the intermediate class. Instructor: Selina Chi.

Learn mindful stretching while practicing mindfulness! This gentle yoga practice takes place while seated to help build strength, increase range of motion, and calm the nervous system. Designed for individuals who have limited mobility and are looking to stay active or are looking for a soothing yoga practice. This is a drop-in class; pre-registration is not required. $5 fee per class. Instructor: Victoria Collett.

Citrus College Summer Exercise Classes - Registration Opens Soon! | |

Registration for Citrus College's "Cardio & Strength for Older Adults" and "Flexibility for Older Adults" begins on May 13, 2024. Register by submitting an application, available at the Joslyn Center; final enrollment will take place with Citrus College. Participants will need an email address in order to register through Citrus College.
Cardio & Strength for Older Adults
June 26 - August 14, 2024
2:30 p.m. - 3:50 p.m.
This training course is specifically designed for the active older adult who wants to improve or maintain flexibility, strength, endurance, and cardiovascular and respiratory functions. Emphasis will be placed on motor movements, hand-eye coordination, body- space awareness, balance training, reaction time, joint protection, and relaxation techniques. Citrus College presents this free, non-credit course for older adults as part of their continuing education program.
Flexibility for Older Adults
June 24 - August 14, 2024
1:00 p.m. - 2:20 p.m.
Join this exercise course designed especially for older adults who wish to maintain physical fitness through gentle exercise. Exercises begin with elementary movements and gradually increase to the individual’s level of desired range of motion, flexibility, and strength. Citrus College presents this free, non-credit course for older adults as part of their continuing education program.

This group offers support, education, and a chance to connect with others who have lost a loved one. It exists to provide hope and comfort in the grief journey through the experience of a supportive community that gives space and time to process feelings of loss to bring healing.

Neurographic Florals Painting Workshop
Wednesday, May 8, 2024
Participants will explore the popular neurographic art method invented by Pavel Piskarev in this colorful interdisciplinary workshop. The exercise practices the simplicity in drawing curves and swoops on the page, or even straight lines and shapes, in the artwork. The curves intersect, and you may add shapes and color. This type of artwork is fun and a good tool to use to cultivate a creative flow. We will explore these methods with paints.
Claude Monet Sunflower Study
Wednesday, May 22, 2024
Participants will imitate the impressionist art style of Claude Monet. This workshop will discuss the impressionist art period, drawing from a still life and the difference between Van Gogh’s and Claude Monet’s Sunflowers. We will use acrylic paint to create this artwork.
*A $10 materials fee (cash or check) is due to the instructor at the start of the workshop.

Calling all knitting and crocheting enthusiasts! Use your knitting skills for a good cause in this group, which meets each Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Joslyn Center, to work on knitting or crocheting projects that will benefit local nonprofits. Projects will include blankets, scarves, hats, and gloves to benefit recipients in need. This season, finished projects will be given to those experiencing homelessness via Inland Valley Hope Partners and/or cancer patients undergoing treatment at Pomona Valley Hospital's Robert & Beverly Lewis Family Cancer Care Center. Bring your needles, hook, and yarn, and join the fun! Individuals with projects for family and friends are welcome to join, as well. There is no registration required to join this group.

War & Existentialism Book Club - Reading List | |

From the early 1900’s to post-WWII, from Voltaire to Joyce, this book club will explore existentialism, absurdism, war, the role of literature, and beautiful prose, among many other topics. This club will meet on the first Friday of each month to discuss the reading selection. The Claremont Gerontology Association, a group of dedicated volunteers from the Claremont Colleges, is excited to read good books and have great discussions with you!

Filled with regret, Ricki hopes to find redemption for all of the bad choices that she made in the past.

The monthly senior food bank, hosted by the Senior Program in collaboration with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, takes place on the second Thursday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Larkin Park. LA County residents ages 60+ are invited to participate in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which provides a free food kit once a month to seniors who meet income guidelines. The food kits are prepared with specific nutritional needs in mind, such as meats, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk, cereals, and more! Join us for a hot meal, social activities, music, and various recreational happenings Monday through Friday. Lunch is served at the Joslyn Center (660 N. This program is funded, in part, by the Los Angeles County Area Agency on Aging.

Access to Technology (ATT) Program
|
The LA County Aging & Disabilities Department is pleased to announce its Access to Technology (ATT) program, aimed at assisting adults aged 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities aged 18 and older, in gaining access to digital connectivity and technology. The goal is to reduce isolation, increase social connections, and enhance self-confidence in navigating digital and online resources.
Eligible participants will receive a customized Samsung tablet, essential cybersecurity training, and a 24-month 5G Internet plan at no cost to the participant. Optional free digital literacy courses are also available.
