READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
PRACTICE OF HOPE
Eli instructed Samuel to tell the Lord, "Speak, for your servant is listening." Too often we say "Listen, Lord, for your servant is speaking.".
- Choose a day this week to turn off the television and your cell phone, and to avoid all social media. Find a quiet place to listen to the Lord. If you aren't sure how to listen for God, read slowly through one of the readings several times, then note a word or phrase that catches your attention. Ponder this word or phrase. Notice the thoughts and feelings that emerge within you.
- St. Paul assures us that our bodies are part of the Body of Christ and are, therefore, sacred. How do you treat your body? Do you get sufficient exercise and sleep? Do you eat healthy foods? What changes might you need to make to honor your body?
We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.

CHURCH CHRISTMAS DECORATION TAKE DOWN
Special thanks to all who helped clean up the Christmas decorations to get the church ready for Ordinary Time. It was encouraging to see so many approach the sanctuary asking what they could do and where they could put things, and to seeing people on ladders right after Mass taking things down. Your eagerness to take care of our church is a deLIGHT!

Thank you to the Latin Women of Finn Hill for sharing Rosca de Reyes (Kings Wreath) with us this past weekend for the Epiphany.
- Rosca de Reyes is only eaten on the Epiphany, January 6.
- It is a sweet bread shaped into an oval to symbolize the love of God - without beginning or end.
- It is topped with ate (strips of colorful candied fruit leather), which symbolize the grace brought by Jesus.
- The baby Jesus is place inside the bread to remind us that Joseph and Mary hid Jesus from Herod.
- Whoever gets the slice with the baby Jesus has to buy or make tamales for el Dia de la Candelaria (Candlemas Day) on February 2.
Lucky for those who found the baby Jesus in their slice, the Latin Women of Finn Hill will be making tamales for us after the 5:00pm Mass on February 3 to celebrate el Dia de la Candelaria and to help raise funds for the High School Esperanza Mission Trek. Thank you Rosario Garcia, Melissa Avalon, Consuelo Chavira, Paulina Onofre, and Erica Hernandez.

THE EUCHARIST AND TRANSFORMATION
|
Pope Francis has repeatedly emphasized that the Eucharist "is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak" (Joy of the Gospel, 47). If we waited to go to communion until we had achieved purity or perfection, we would likely have to avoid the sacrament altogether. That would be like waiting until our symptoms disappeared to take the medicine the doctor gave us! The Eucharist is not the reward of our labors, but food for the journey. In the Prayer after Communion at every Mass, the priest asks for the fruits of the Eucharist-and there are many. Among other things, the Eucharist...
- ...increases our union with Christ
- ...separates us from sin
- ...wipes away venial sins
- ...preserves us from future mortal sin
- ...brings about the Unity of the Mystical Body
- ...commits us to the poor
- ...brings about the unity of Christians
Sometimes, we put limits on the Eucharist, thinking of it as purely "spiritual," impacting our personal relationship with God, but not much else. But the Eucharist is never "mine"; the Eucharist is always "ours." By its very nature, Eucharist is communal, touching all our relationships - with God, with each other, with those we know and love and those we struggle to love.
