MIKE'S MUSINGS
A note from the desk of CRCC President and CEO Mike Throne:

Ever used Zillow? Or looked up home building statistics that led you to the National Association of Home Builders?

If you have, you've used data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Those organizations use Census data because it's the most reliable information gathered in a consistent manner throughout the United States.
American Community Survey: Measuring the Dynamic Changes in America
American Community Survey: Measuring the Dynamic Changes in America

And you can contribute to that data, because it's almost time for the 2020 Census. The Chamber is a business partner of the U.S. Census Bureau and working to help deliver an accurate and complete count of Ross County next year. We're part of the Complete Count Committee for our area - a group of trusted community leaders who will develop the strategies to increase awareness of the census and its importance to our future.

It's critical that all people in our county are counted because the count impacts the funding in our community. But the most valuable information might be how the community is changing -- which helps all of us keep pushing toward a vibrant community that will attract business and industry.

The count is important for business as Census data is traditionally the basis for economic development grants as it also help business owners and entrepreneurs get information about their customer base, including income levels, household size and more, which helps inform decisions about pricing and location. And that's the tip of the iceberg.

So, how can businesses help?
  • Consider hosting a Census solutions workshop. Any business (or community-based organization) can host one. It's a creative, collaborative, problem-solving event that helps to communicate the importance of census data, how to reach the hard to count populations in our area, and encourage participation in the Census and its programs. If your business would be interested, here's a place to get more information.
  • Provide information to your employees and customers about the importance and benefits of participating. You can even invite a Census Bureau official to speak to your group.
  • Look for ways to spread information, tools, and messaging in your employee newsletters, social media, and more to raise the awareness of the 2020 Census.
There's a Census kickoff meeting planned for July 29 and you can count on the Chamber to relay important information about the 2020 Census throughout the rest of this year and as the count begins. Contact me at the Chamber for more information.
