The Calvary Connection
August 2018
" I volunteer at Calvary because I want to be that person for someone else – to encourage them to press on, to focus on the blessings in life despite its difficulties... " - Delia, Calvary volunteer
Enriched through Arts & Education
At Calvary Women’s Services, our mission is to empower homeless women in Washington, DC, to transform their lives through housing, health, education, and employment programs. We believe that providing quality education services to women plays a huge role in fostering self-reliance and independence.

Guided by this philosophy, we developed our Life Skills, Education, and Arts Program - LEAP . It empowers women to think creatively, to set ambitious goals for themselves, and to build upon their sense of confidence and self-worth.

From daily afternoon classes to exciting field trips, LEAP plays an integral part in women transforming their lives at Calvary. Visit our blog for more on LEAP, and to read about recent activities and excursions...
Volunteer Spotlight: Delia Anteme
Delia Anteme began as a facilitator for our education classes, and eventually transitioned to an overnight volunteer role when her schedule changed.

When asked why she volunteers, she responded " I do it because I want to be that person for someone else – to encourage them to press on, to focus on the blessings in life despite its difficulties, and to believe in people’s capacity for kindness and compassion." Read more about Delia's volunteer experience on our blog.
Anacostia River Tour with Baker Tilly
Volunteers from Baker Tilly accompanied women on a guided boat tour of the Anacostia River. Field trip participants learned about ecological issues affecting the river, and about the ways in which the Anacostia Watershed interacts with the larger Potomac & Chesapeake Bay Watersheds. Check out our photos for a visual account of the day:
Summer Career Fair at THEARC
Members of Step Up DC, Calvary's job development program, took part in a career fair at THEARC (Town Hall Education Arts Center) in Southeast DC. The job fair, sponsored by the DC Department of Human Services, featured over two dozen employers. There was also a variety of community service organizations on hand, offering support to people seeking employment. Visit our blog for a full account of the event.
Spa Day at Calvary
Women at Calvary were recently treated to an afternoon Spa Day by a group of volunteers. Services included hair, makeup, nails, massage and facials. Luckily, a professional photographer was on hand to capture the magic. To see the beautiful photos , click below:
