Kitchen Transitions to 'Cook on-Site'

Starting after spring break, the kitchen will transition from "pre-pack" kitchen to a "cook on-site" kitchen. This means that Ms. Ann, Ms. Toni, & Mr. Marco will be dishing the warm foods up for students. The salad bar will stay the same. This means less waste and more fresh foods!

Every student receives one complete breakfast meal and one complete lunch meal each school day at no cost. If your student asks for a second meal or to purchase an a la carte item, they are allowed to get those, but they are charged for those items. When students go through the lunch line, they enter their PIN whether it’s their first meal which is free, or they are purchasing additional meals or a la carte items. Some of our students do have negative balances at the moment. Even if they have a negative balance, your child will always get a free breakfast and lunch, but they are technically not supposed to allow students to get extra food if their balance is negative. You should get automated emails from the Titan system if your child's account has a negative balance. Click here to create an account, check the balance, or make a payment.

Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8 a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean. The first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.

The path of the eclipse continues from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Per NASA, Minnesota will not be in the path of totality, but a partial eclipse will be visible. Reminder that it is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. When watching the partial phases of the solar eclipse directly with your eyes, which happens before and after totality, you must look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. MPS has provided special glasses to allow students to safely view the eclipse, and teachers will be doing lessons before the eclipse about the science of eclipses.

Ramadan and Fasting

This year Ramadan begins the evening of March 10 and ends on Tuesday, April 9 with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. During this time many Muslims around the world practice fasting from dawn until sunset. For those Burroughs students choosing to fast it can be difficult to be around food during the day. We will allow students who are fasting for Ramadan to sit in the office during lunch instead of the lunchroom if they would like. Please reach out to Dr. V, Mrs. Adamaley, and your child's teacher if you want us to be aware of your child's fasting.

Here is a great article about how one local school supports Muslim students during Ramadan and year round.

Social Emotional Wellness (SEW)

There are many ways to be a healthy caregiver. Whatever your particular caregiving style may be, you’re probably striving to make your child feel loved, safe, confident, and resilient. We are all working to build connection and understanding with our child and one of the easiest ways to do this is actually through play! We’ve compiled a list of easy “I Love You” Games that focus on four essential qualities found in healthy caregiver-child relationships: structure, nurture, challenge, and engagement. We know that you’re already doing so much to care for your child and make them feel loved. And adding one (or a few) of these "I Love You" Games to your daily routine might give your child (and you!) a little extra boost of love and connection! We hope you enjoy them together.

Thank you to those who attended the SEW event on Digital Wellbeing for Kids with Erin Walsh from Spark and Stitch Institute! We would like to gather your honest feedback in this Survey to help us plan for future events. Your email and name will NOT be collected. Here are the slides from the event

If you would like to learn more about the SEW Committee or join us, please contact Maggie Skrypek. All are welcome and we would love to have you!
