MPHS Environmental and Natural Resources (ENR) Team places 5th in the nation!

Our Mary Persons Environmental and Natural Resources (ENR) team placed 5th in the Nation!!! Team members are Jacob McGouirk, Kaitlyn Shields, Cameron Sparks, and Nyx Winchester. Cameron Sparks placed 5th, Jacob McGouirk placed 11th, and Kaitlyn Shields placed 13th out of the best ENR individuals in the nation! Nyx Winchester earned the title of a Silver Emblem Individual!

Our team represented Georgia FFA at the 95th National FFA Convention & Expo!! This team has worked so hard to get to compete at the national competition! They competed in the Area 3 ENR Competition in November where they placed 1st. The top two teams from each of the six FFA areas in the state moved onto the state competition. At the state competition in December they earned the title of State Champions! Before traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana, the team competed in a virtual general knowledge exam, identification exam, and data interpretation practicum. Once in Indiana, they competed in a team activity and three hands-on practicums. There are five available practicums to compete in which include Data Interpretation, Water Analysis, Soil Profile, GPS Locations, and Waste Management. They did not know which practicums they would be competing in until they arrived. The combined scores of both their virtual and in-person competitions led them to their 5th place National placing! You can read more about these great students at our newsletter linked below!

Congratulations Jacob, Kaitlyn, Cameron, and Nyx! We are so proud of y'all!

Classroom Happenings

Ms. Carter's Intro to Health Class

Last week Ms. Carter’s Intro to Health class participated in CPR training. Captain Cristina Bramlett demonstrated how the automatic CPR device, “Lucas” can provide CPR when emergency responders are having to move a patient and are unable to continue compressions or when they just need a break. Students were able to earn their certification at the end of the course.

Ms. Carter's Essentials of Healthcare Class

On Friday, Ms. Carter’s Essentials of Healthcare Class dissected sheep hearts as part of their study of the cardiovascular system. This allowed them to assess the structure of the heart using their hands and explore the various chambers, valves, and vessels that make-up the organ. They were also able to understand how the blood flows through the heart and drew chalk diagrams on their desks.

Ms. Greenway's and Ms. Schneider's 11th Grade ELA Classes

Across the junior classes, students completed an imagery project where they were expected to create an image that reflected fear found in one of the quotations they selected from “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Johnathan Edwards. We turned this into a competition, and Inez Thompson from Greenway’s 4th block was the winner.

Following that, students also competed in a mask making competition in preparation for Edgar Allan Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death,” where Sandi Burns from Schneider's 4th block won!

Our judges included 9th, 10th, and 12th grade English classes as well as Mrs. Trevitt’s AP class! Students judged the imagery project based on a true rubric, but the winner of the mask competition was just based on judges picking which mask they liked best,

Ms. Morgan's World History Classes

Ms. Morgan's classes were on the front lines of literacy as they built trenches and read about World War I between battles.

JROTC News

The MPHS JROTC Rifle Team went to Lamar Co for their first competition of the season and won the match with a score of 965. Tia Eckelbarger was top shot with a 249 closely followed by Hunter Dorn, Christian Guitierrez, Dade Purdy, and Devin McLendon who were only a few points behind. A very impressive score for the team considering 3 are new shooters who only started a month ago. Next match will be this Thursday at the MCAC gym right after school. Spectators are welcome.
