JULY 2024

Learning and Play at Summer Camp!

July is one of the busiest months at CitySquash! We spend time organizing camp experiences for our students locally, nationally, and internationally. This summer, CitySquash team members will attend squash and academic camps at Amherst College, Bowdoin College, Cornell Univeristy, Exeter, Kent, and Taft. They will also travel abroad to London and Colombia. Pictured above, our students who stay local spend five weeks taking part in squash practices, academic enrichment, STEM activities, and field trips. Near and far, our students are active and engaged when school is out.

James Wins the Courage to Climb Award

At the Indian Mountain School gradaution, James Vazquez was awarded the Courage to Climb Award. This award recognizes outstanding leadership on behalf of Indian Mountain School. An excerpt of the language read by the Head of School to celebrate his achievement is here: James's leadership in the IMS community is extensive: all-school president, multi-sport captain and prefect of Lower Doolittle, James has been elected to be a leader in almost every capacity of his IMS experience...James will leave behind a legacy of treating people with dignity and respect, appreciating the good in life, and leading by example. As an athlete and multi-sport leader, James is a fierce competitor, but never at the expense of good sportsmanship and loyal care for his teammates...He is a tireless leader, quick to celebrate the accomplishments of others, and always there to lend a hand. James, you have reminded us that the strongest voice in the room need not always be the loudest. You have earned our respect and admiration. Congratulations James! We know you'll thrive at Hotchkiss next year!

ON THE COURT

Success at SEA Individuals

CitySquashers dominated on the courts at the 2024 Squash+Education Alliance Individual Nationals, held at Salisbury School and Berkshire School. Pictured above, Lindyn Morocho (Taft School '28) and Stephany Silva (Canterbury '26) battled it out in the finals of the GU17 division. Jayden Vasquez (Jonas Bronck Academy, 7th grade) was the BU13 winner and Ashanti Amastal (Franklin & Marshall '27) and Rodrigo Hipolito (Morris Academy for Collaborative Studies '27) were the runners up in the G19 and BU15 divisions. The weekend was a celebration of the hard work our students and coaches put in on the squash courts this season. We are proud to continue the CitySquash tradition of bringing home SEA hardware!

IN THE COMMUNITY

CitySquash Gives Back

Last week, CitySquash participated in a day of service. Students volunteered at Orchard Beach (pictured above), Brooklyn Park, and the Bronx Park. They also did work in support of Muddy Paws Rescue and My Cancer Research. CitySquash Serves is an important tradition and a way for team members to show gratitude, one of our CitySquash core values.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

City Concilmembers Visit Bronx Site

We were excited to host our local councilman, Oswald Feliz, and District 5 councilwoman (and squash fan!), Julie Menin, at our building site. Along with touring the building, they met with CitySquash college students Jesse Brew (Amherst College '26), Kimberly Lucero (Connecticut College '26), and Caleb Boateng (Middlebury College '26). We are grateful for the councilmembers' support of CitySquash and this project. The second floor of the building is now built and all classrooms and offices are framed. We remain on track to open the Julian H. Robertson Jr. CitySquash Center this spring!
