Dear Saints Families and Friends,

At times, our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”

-Albert Schweitzer

Greetings from Berks Catholic! When I think of the many people in my educational career who have mentored me, helped me, inspired me, challenged me and listened to me, I can’t help but be grateful for them and for what they have taught me. So many times, they have provided a spark to me that I needed when my “flame was ready to go out.” I wonder where I would be without the likes of Shirley Bounds, Sr. Mildred Chesnavage, Anne Bruni, Dr. Michael Coury and Mike Grasso who have inspired me immensely in my career.

We are blessed at Berks Catholic to have different people that do the same exact thing for our students. Throughout my first few months, I have heard story after story from our students about how a staff person have helped or inspired them. Whether they be teachers, coaches, other parents or peers, they serve a role in the lives of our students. Let us take a moment this month and thank our loving God for those people who are present to us and rekindle a spark in our students’ lives. They are a blessing indeed. Have a great weekend!

It’s a great day to be a Saint!

Attendance Reminder

I am resharing something Mr. Ditsky sent out this Sunday in his College and Career Counseling newsletter. I found it impactful and thought it would be good to resend:

EXCESSIVE ABSENCE and TARDINESS

  • If they can’t get to school on time when mom or dad are at home looking over their shoulder, why would I think they will show up for me? College football coach to BC College Counseling Staff

  • Habitual, unexcused absences and late arrivals to school can affect your academic performance and may be considered when applying to college, by college coaches, military enlistment, and for jobs. If you aren’t showing up on time or at all to BC it sends a signal to recruiters and potential employers that you might not show up for them.

College Visits Next Week

The following colleges will be visiting BC next week: PA College of Technology and DeSales University on Tuesday.

World Kindness Day

Berks Catholic will once again be observing World Kindness Day. The actual day is November 13th. We will observe it, however, on Friday, November 17th with a dress down day. In order to dress down, we ask that students donate from the list of needed items below. Items will be used for Blessing Bags for people in need in our community and to help restock the food pantries at our partner parishes. Thank you to the Sophomore Saint Ambassadors who will be assisting with this project. Students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue for the dress down day.

Santa with the Saints

All Saints Day Saints Scavenger Hunt

As you are aware, “Fun” is the fourth Pillar of Berks Catholic. I am a big believer that students need to have fun in school. Last week, on our Feast Day, we held a “Saints Scavenger Hunt.” After Mass, I informed the student body that I had hidden 50 pictures of saints throughout the school for them to find. Three winning Saints would be called at the end of the day and if a student had that saint, he/she would win a Wawa gift card. I mentioned after Mass to the students that I wondered about the probability of winning had a student collected multiple saint pictures. In true BC spirit, math teacher Mr. Greg Scanlon got to work. Look at some of his findings on probability.

Driving on Campus

Students as well as adults are reminded to please drive responsibly on school campus. Please abide by the one-way signs into and out of the parking lot, particularly the exits onto Parkside Drive North. They are exit only. We have had several recent incidents where accidents were narrowly avoided. Thank you for keeping all of our Saints safe as you drive on to campus.
