AND NOW THE REAL NEW REAL NEWS FROM SLIM'S SHADY TRAILER PARK

A couple years ago, a guy gave me a call on my shoe phone, asked me to sing six songs as part of his big band concert at a winery outside of San Diego.

I'd never done that before. I drove the Slimousine from Palm Springs (CA) to the winery and stood on the side of the stage until I got called up to do sing my tunes.

Wow. It was...quite an impressive joyride! The saxes were blaring, the drums were swingin', and the trumpets were titillating! To stand in front of a 17-piece band and sing those Rat Pack songs was exhilarating. Intoxicating.

I loved it!

After the show, I was so pumped up. On the drive back to the Slim Shack, all I could think about was how much fun I had and how much I wanted to do it again.

I knew where I wanted to do it. Palm Springs.

Now I needed to find a big band. I called Shea Welsh, a great guitar player and long-time Slim friend who's also a fellow Baltimoron.

We're from Baltimore!

Shea has a good ear for talent. He's the one who told me to hire sax man Kevin Levi, sound unheard. And I did. And Kevin is one of my favorite all-time alto players. And a true-blue amigo.

So when Shea told me to call Paul McDonald, I did.

Paul and I met for lunch in Palm Springs and I pitched him my idea. Paul was in. He has an amazing big band and has all the original Quincy Jones/Count Basie/Nelson Riddle charts for the Rat Pack songs I wanted to sing.

Perfetto!

I had the band. Now I needed the venue.

I looked around. When I walked onstage at the ballroom of the Riviera Hotel, it was exactly what I wanted. The original Rat Pack--Sammy Davis, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra--had performed on that very stage. And not much had changed.

I loved the whole 1960s vibe of the place. I booked the ballroom and put on the concert myself. Hired the lighting folks, the sound people, the stage hands.

The musicians Paul had assembled were the best around. They played their hearts out that night. To stand in front of all that joyousness on that storied stage and sing those songs was such a treat.

I couldn't wait to do it once again. So a couple years later, I went back to the Riviera Hotel to book that beautiful ballroom.

But I couldn't do the show there because...

Jimmy Buffet bought the Riviera Hotel and turned it into a Margaritaville!

NFK. Not Effing Kidding! The whole vibe was gone.

I didn't want to waste away in Margaritaville, so I decided to do it at the Annenberg, an elegant, modern theater with great sound, stage, and lights.

Once again, I set the whole thing up. Sound. Lights. Hired the Paul McDonald Big Band. The concert was sold-out!

And then, two weeks before the show, the state of California was shut down because of COVID.

No show for Slimbo!

Not only was that Rat Pack show cancelled, almost every show I had booked suddenly evaporated. Disappeared. For more than a year.

Ouch.

It took a while to recover from all that mess.

Finally, this past September, I decided to roll the dice again.

So I booked the Annenberg. Hired Paul McDonald and his 17-piece band. Asked vocalist Bobbi Taylor to sing a few songs. Invited Chase to play sax. Asked Tateng Katindig to play the 9-foot concert grand piano.

And insisted that Shea Welsh play guitar!

So this Sunday, March 24th at 5 PM, the Slim Man Rat Pack Show is ON!

So even if you're reading this right now while climbing Mt. Everest, get your sherpas to head down the mountain and mosey on over to Palm Springs. You don't want to miss this show!

You can get tickets at slimman.com or you can call 760.407.2771. Or you can buy tickets at the door.

It's gonna be fun, Slim People. Sherpas welcome!

You're gonna love it.

And it's all about love.

Who loves ya?
