PAVEMENT & RESURFACING PROJECT

EAST FRONT STREET BEGINS SEPTEMBER 25

Paving projects discussed over the past few years which were deferred during the COVID 19 pandemic are planned to move forward. These include two Special Improvement District paving projects previously approved by the City Commission and resurfacing of East Front Street between Boardman and US-31. The City also included the repair of two sidewalk locations that resulted in a homeowner closing their driveway and damage from an irrigation system leak along College Drive.

East Front Street Resurfacing Begins September 25th

The resurfacing project on E. Front Street between Boardman Avenue and US-31 is slated to begin Sunday, September 25, 2022 and be completed by Friday, September 30, 2022. Activities include milling existing pavement and overlay with hot mix asphalt.

Work will be performed overnight between the hours of 6:45 pm and 7:00 am. Two way traffic on US-31 will be maintained through the intersection at E. Front St. with lane closure and lane shift outside of the hours when work is being performed.  This project will generate dust, noise, and cause inconvenience.

The street will be closed to all traffic and on street parking will be prohibited when workers are present and work is being performed.

Due to the seasonal window of time closing on the projects, the start date for the remainder is to be determined.

Pavement & Resurfacing Project Locations

  • Location #1 Alley east of David St. north of E. Eighth St. (SID 2020-01)
  • Location #2 Alley west of Rose ST. and North of E 8th ST. (SID 2022-01)
  • Location #3 E. Front St. b/t Boardman Ave. and US-31
  • Location #4 Lincoln St (sidewalk on Fern St.) (Adjustment from Driveway Closure)
  • Location #5 College Dr. Sidewalk (Repair from Irrigation System Damage)

The project total is $327,101.15 with project funds from the Capital Projects Fund and Special Improvement Districts.

MDOT M-72 AND M-22 REBUILD

OPEN HOUSE: SEPTEMBER 29

MDOT plans to rebuild a 2.2-mile section of M-72 (Grandview Parkway) from Division Street in Traverse City and M-22 (Bay Shore Drive) to Cherry Bend Road in Elmwood Township in 2025. The proposed rebuilding work will remove the concrete and composite (asphalt over concrete) pavements and restore the surface condition and ride quality to good condition; address drainage issues, including curb and gutter, storm sewer, culverts, and outlets; replace sidewalks and nonmotorized paths; make sidewalk ramp upgrades to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards; make operational enhancements at the M-72 (East Traverse Road)/M-22 intersection; upgrade the traffic signal at Cherry Bend Road; and improve access management where possible.

The public is invited to attend an open house to discuss the planned 2025 project. MDOT and consultant ROWE will present draft designs for the project incorporating public comment received at a June 2022 public meeting and gather additional feedback. There will be a brief presentation of the draft design at 4 and 5 pm.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Mulch and donated compost from the City's Keystone facility earlier in the summer to the Traverse Heights Garden had a big impact on the plants!

"I've had an obsession with growing pumpkins and with the help of the City's donation, we're going to get at the very least one great pumpkin!"

-Shea O'Brien, Traverse Heights Garden Keeper Extraordinaire

DID YOU KNOW....

Between 2016 and 2021, the City invested nearly $8,000,000 in improved sidewalk connections.

In addition to allocating more funding, the City Commission also identified that walkability and respect for pedestrians is a deeply-held value of the citizens of the City of Traverse City,

Funding was provided by numerous resources and resulted in 20.37 miles of improvements.
