CHRISTMAS TREE DROP OFF SITE OPEN

The Parks and Recreation Division offers a Christmas Tree drop-off site for City residents. Please be sure that trees are free of all decorations, tinsel, etc. so we may properly mulch and reuse them in nature.

Trees can be brought to the boat launch parking lot at Hull Park at the west end of Hannah Street, just west of Woodmere Avenue. There is no charge for this service. Please do not leave trees in the alleys, streets, or City parks. The City will not be collecting them there.

Fun Fact: The trees are chipped and used for trail surfacing for City parks and Brown Bridge Quiet Area, mulching material, and erosion control.

VOLLEYBALL COURTS EXPANSION

At their December 2022 meeting, the City Commission approved a two-court expansion, from six to eight volleyball courts at West End Beach. The expansion will accommodate the nearly 700 local volleyball players who use the current six courts on a weekly basis.

In Spring 2022, the City served up new sand at the West at the volleyball courts. Previous sand on the courts was from the original construction in 1980 and was not suitable for volleyball courts due to it becoming extremely hot, coarse, and rocky. Moving forward, recreationalists can now enjoy finer sand that is also easier for to mechanically groom.

LIGHTING ORDINANCE AMENDMENT

The Lighting Ordinance Amendment that was previously scheduled for the December 19, 2022 City Commission agenda will now be on the Tuesday, January 3, 2023 City Commission agenda. The recommended ordinance amendment is due to inconsistent regulations that was recently identified in a court ruling.

It is the intent of Outdoor Lighting regulations to:

  • Minimize light trespass and light straying from artificial light sources;
  • Eliminate intrusive artificial lighting that contributes to the "sky glow" phenomenon and disrupts the natural quality of nighttime;
  • Minimize harshly lighted surfaces and direct glare in order to enhance nighttime vision;
  • Encourage lighting practices and lighting systems that are designed to conserve energy; and
  • Provide for adequate nighttime safety, utility, security, and productivity.
