MASTER PLAN REWRITE

CHAPTER DEVELOPMENT & PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

As the City continues to work on the Master Plan Rewrite Project, various chapters are in development and community engagement continues to contribute to the framework of the plan. The Master Plan guides city policy and land use patterns, which in turn affects what types of developments go where; how everything connects via streets, sidewalks, and trails; and what types of infrastructure and amenities serve the community at large, including locals and tourists alike.

The content of the Master Plan is currently being drafted and the steering committee has reviewed chapters on planning for tourism, demographics, housing, and natural features. Chapters currently being worked on include land use, arts, culture, and recreation, and infrastructure and energy.

TAKE THE E-BIKE SURVEY

Our friends at TART Trails strive to support a positive experience for all trail users which includes working to educate the community on proper trail etiquette to ensure our trails remain safe and welcoming for all.

An E-Bike Survey has been launched to better understand use and perceptions. The increase in the use of electric bikes (e-bikes) has created an opportunity to expand and improve trail etiquette education programming. Your input on this survey will help to provide personal experiences and perceptions along the trail network.

REVISED TRANSPORTATION DEMAND MANAGEMENT STUDY ADOPTED

In 2017, the DDA conducted a Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Study to develop strategies that increase the efficiency and effectiveness of transportation infrastructure and resources. Over the past four years, parking management processes have improved to align with new practices by implementing quick wins. Following are a few of the changes that have occurred in order to prepare for future changes: 1) discontinue buy in bulk parking discounts for quarterly and annual permits and only offer monthly permits, 2) decouple surface and garage parking for parking permits, 3) create seasonal meter and garage parking rates, and 4) create zone based pricing for low and high parking demand areas.

A revised TDM Plan was adopted by City Commission at their April 3, 2023 meeting. The revised TDM report builds off the existing recommendations offering revised demand-based approaches, transit and mobility solutions, and includes new recommendations based on changes that have occurred in the downtown area over the past five years.

The goal of the revised TDM study is to identify how high impact areas can be decreased and use underutilized areas to meet the needs for future infill development and increase mobility options for all users in the downtown area.

DID YOU KNOW....

Michigan is the second-most agriculturally diverse state in the nation, second in diversity to California!  With our variety of seasons, rich farming regions and proximity to the Great Lakes, Michigan grows and distributes hundreds of different crops each year. The state leads the nation in the production of several crops, including asparagus; black and cranberry beans; cucumbers; tart cherries; Niagara grapes; and squash. Michigan agriculture contributes more than $104.7 billion annually to our state’s economy.

As they saying goes, April showers bring May flowers! Say hello to spring!
