VOTING STICKER DESIGN CONTESTS RECEIVE NATIONAL AWARD

U.S. ELECTION ASSISTANCE COMMISSION CLEARINGHOUSE AWARDS

The City of Traverse City has been honored with the 2022 Clearinghouse award for their Voting Sticker Design Contests from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission! Each year, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) invites submissions for its national Clearinghouse Awards, or Clearies for short. Under the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA), the EAC is charged with serving as a clearinghouse for election administration information. By celebrating innovative efforts from state and local election offices, the Clearies helps the EAC to fulfill this important mission.

The “I Voted” Sticker award category seeks creative and original designs that exemplify voter education, outreach, and community flair. In 2020, the City launched a multi-year sticker design contest to promote voter pride and build education and awareness surrounding elections. The creative challenges included "I Voted" in 2020, "Future Voter" in 2021, and "First Time Voter" in 2022. 

HONORING MEMORIAL DAY AT OAKWOOD CEMETERY

This Friday, May 26th, Oakwood Cemetery will have flag placement in honor of Memorial Day beginning at 10 am. Each year, with the help of community members nearly 2,500 flags are placed through Oakwood Cemetery for Memorial Day.

The public is welcome to join Cemetery Sexton and community groups to place flags. Those interested may meet at the original Mausoleum at the Northwest corner of the Cemetery off 8th and Steele Street.

The City's Oakwood Cemetery opened in 1861 and was designed as a "garden-style cemetery." The park-like setting with 65 acres holds a lot of history. Oakwood Cemetery was actually 4 cemeteries on the same property: the Catholic Cemetery, the City Cemetery, the Jewish Cemetery, and the Northern Michigan Asylum Cemetery, which is mostly unmarked.

OPENING

Due to recent updates to the Clinch Park Splash Pad the opening date has been delayed. Check the web page for updates and an announcement for the opening date soon!

Improvements to the Clinch Park Splash Pad will include an automatic weather detection sensor in combination with a touch activator. The automated system will operate more efficiently by utilizing rain and wind sensor to gauge weather patterns and in turn greatly reduce the amount of water, chemical and energy currently used to operate. The new system will also increase access and mobility for park users.

In addition to upgrades, operationally the water-scape will now include a cascade river, a hands-on water play-scape that allows exploration through flow play and interactive waves and orbs, and also allows for collaborative play. 

TART IMPROVEMENT & EXTENSION

PROJECT

A closer look at the proposed design for the Peninsula Drive portion of the TART Improvement & Extension Project will be presented on May 30th at the NMC Innovation Lab, 1701 East Front Street, from 6 - 7:30 pm.

The third round of public engagement is planned specifically for the Peninsula Drive segment of trail between the intersection of Peninsula Drive at E. Front Street and Eastern Ave.

At the session, the project team and engineers will reflect on the input that was provided at the February and March 2023 engagement sessions, share the proposed design plan and objectives for the Peninsula Drive segment, and discuss next steps and anticipated timelines.

NOT ALL HEROES WHERE CAPES

You may be familiar with our Streets Division being responsible for maintaining 110 miles of roadway, 105+ miles of sidewalks and trails, and more, but when duty called for a unique job, they rose to the occasion!

When a citizen witnessed a family of ducks crossing Division Street with their babies and a few falling through the grate of a catch basin, they called the City for help. The Streets Division was ready to go! The team checked the catch basins from Division to Grandview Parkway, finally finding the baby ducks. As the parents circled above, the team used a fishing net, and the baby ducks were set free to reunite with their family!

Huge kudos to the Streets Division team of Chris Weber, Kyle Becker, and Kevin Bratschi for saving the day!

FLOWERING CHERRY TREES ALONG THE TART

The City of Traverse City teamed up with the National Cherry Festival and TART Trails to plant four Yoskino trees and four Kwanzan trees along the TART, east of Woodmere. The cherry blossom trees are flowering, but do not produce fruit. The location will provide a more protected and blossoming experience along the TART!
