Congratulations!
Rev. Jenn!
(Pictured above holding her bib and a card from the HN Sunday School kids)
It would have been enough for Rev Jenn to have just finished the Boston Marathon, but noooo, she went ahead and finished 14th out of 934 in her age group (women 55-59)!!
Rev. Jenn's official time was 3:27:38!
We, back here in paradise, cheered for Rev. Jenn, and let her know how proud we are of her! Click below to watch the HNS kids waving Rev. Jenn in on
Marathon Monday 4/15.

Who’s in the Pew
By Jean Steele
Carol Ching was born in Honolulu. Her father had come from Canton, China, at age 11 and attended Iolani School. He believed in private schools and sent two daughters to The Priory, and Carol to Roman Catholic schools. Sons and grandchildren have also attended Iolani.
At U.H. Manoa, Carol studied elementary education and earned a masters in educational administration, while also enjoying courses in math and Mandarin.
She taught at Kahala Elementary for 18 years before moving on to vice principal and principal positions. She rounded out her long career with developing curricula for Windward schools and in the Business area, dealing with design and construction of new schools and capital improvement projects.
In 1970, Carol was a founding member of the local chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an organization for teachers. Her participation has taken her to national and international meetings. Last year she finally got to Kansas City and visited the ADK headquarters.
Carol, her parents and her brothers were baptized at St. Elizabeth’s, but when her three children were young and the young family was living in Hawaii Kai, they transferred to Holy Nativity when Fr. Crane was Rector.
Now retired for twenty years, Carol keeps very busy. As a member of the Hawaii Heritage Society, she conducts tours of Chinatown for school groups, tourists and the like. She also reads every week for the Library for the Visually Handicapped; her assignment is the Long’s ad, which she prefers to her one-time task of reading the obituaries. Wanting to keep healthy and fit, Carol also frequents the gym!
Carol journeyed to China for five months to teach conversational English, but with 60 to 80 students it was a daunting challenge. However, she made fast friends with the local teachers who also taught English; they would tell her not to speak on their outings because her accent would give her away and they would be charged the "foreigner prices." Carol had great fun on many outings led by these friends.
January through April of this year will find Carol in Las Vegas twice, Japan and Madrid (where her granddaughter Kirin performed hula with the Iolani Orchestra)!
Carol was elected to the Vestry in 2023; she has been joined by her daughter Stephanie who is the new Treasurer.

Altar Guild Aloha!
Did you know that all the members of our Altar Guild were trained by other members? No app, no online course; just good old fashioned on-the-job training!
The Altar Guild are the worker bees who make sure all is ready for service each Sunday and for the Holidays. Quite a bit of skill and knowledge go into getting it just right!
An example of their service concerns
the linens that grace the altar:
Altar Guild knows that the white
“table cloth” on the altar is the Fair Linen. The smaller square of linen before the priest is the Corporal.
On top of it is placed the Chalice. Then comes the Purificator, a small napkin. A small plate called the
Paten comes next and it holds the Host, a large wafer which we see the priest elevate during the
consecration.
Then comes the square Pall, then the Veil which entirely covers the Chalice and Paten.
On top sits a Burse made of the same fabric and color as the Veil. It holds extra Purificators. You will
see the Eucharistic minister or priest use a Purificator to wipe the rim of the chalice after a congregant has drunk from it.
Currently the Altar Guild members are:
Sandra Braham, Lila Johnson, Kimberly Garner, Noboku Loncar, Nina Livingston, Carol Otani,
and Ann McCrary.
Mahalo ladies, for ALL you do!
